Nokia seeks patent on it’s upcoming communicator device

Media, games, and communications – all these assets come covered in Nokia’s forthcoming communicator device. Being a usual practice, Nokia sees it acquire patent on the device’s blueprints this Christmas. This folding widget would have four attached pieces, I assume, two for a full QWERTY keyboard and the other two for an exceptionally supple screen. Well, there is not even the slightest cue regarding its usability and ease in handling. Anyway, hope everything comes out spot on!

Nokia E90 v300.34.84 firmware update now available for download

For users of the last great Nokia Communicator phone called the Nokia E90 who wish to get in on some latest firmware action, you may now do so by heading over to your computer’s Nokia Software Updater and updating your E90’s firmware.

The Nokia E90’s last firmware version was 210.34.75, and now it’s up to 300.34.84. The firmware update contains some rather important fixes and new features, some of which are listed below.

Just a quick note: upgrading to the latest Nokia E90 firmware will rid it of BlackBerry support, but here’s what you get in return.

Be sure to back up your data before updating because, you know, it’s going to get erased completely.

Nokia Communicator Series next installment can sport a touch screen

Nokia has finally taken the touch screen interface seriously. They unveiled their first phone to run on their special Symbian S60 5th Edition OS and as the capture above suggests, more can be in the offing. An eagle eyed blogger caught this concept during the streaming of S60 5th Edition’s webcast. The phone looks from the Communicator Series and if all things go well, we can expect this baby to see soon. Nokia still eyeing iPhone? Maybe yes.

Samsung i780 review

Samsung i780 can be considered the first communicator of the company with a full QWERTY keyboard, as its predecessors such as i320 and i600 were built on Windows Mobile 5 smartphone platform and aren’t considered communicator phones. Samsung SGH-i780, unlike the two previous models, also has a touchscreen, which coupled with its QWERTY keyboard gives the maximum possibilities for entering data.

Keyboard

The buttons of the keyboard are rather small - so small, in fact, that it’s unclear where the company intends to put localized labels, as the buttons can barely fit two symbols at the moment. For entering information in non-English languages, you will need to use the virtual on-screen keyboard; it’s entirely possible that the commercial version of the phone will have this downside as well. Here’s how it looks:

Design

The phone is pretty compact for a communicator; when compared to, say, Nokia’s E61i, the i780 is significantly narrower and slightly longer. Its dimensions are entirely acceptable for a phone of this type and it fits in your hand nicely; you can also reach all the buttons of the keyboard with just one hand. You will only need your other one if you’ll want to use the stylus. Speaking of which, the stylus is telescopic and pretty convenient to use.

There are two additional buttons on the sides of the phone – the volume control on the left, and a programmable button on the right. The memory card slot and the standard Samsung port for connecting headset or the USB data cable are located just above it. You can see all that in the photos below:

The back panel of the phone is made from rubbery Soft Touch plastic. Under it, there’s a pretty large battery. The capacity wasn’t specified on it, but I expect it to be at least 1200 mAh. The back cover when closed stays secured in place without any hint of squeaks or looseness. The speaker and the lens of the built-in camera are located at the top. A photo coming right up:

Continuing with the design of the phone, the block of navigational buttons deserves a note. There are your standard red and green buttons for accepting or dropping the call and a navigational button on each side, as well as Start and OK buttons. What makes it interesting is the touchpad – yes, a touchpad –in the middle. It works similarly to touchpads in notebooks; you can control the cursor on the screen with it, and it’s quite convenient and easy to use. You can set the sensitivity level for it, and it also works as a clickable button.

Display

The phone has a pretty unusual square display using 320×320 resolution (having in mind that most communicators use either 320×240 or new 640×480). Since the aspect ratio is different, there are problems with some software. Several applications, like those from PBS software, either don’t launch at all or don’t fit into the screen completely. Opera, on the other hand, works just fine. If you plan to buy this phone, you need to keep in mind the fact that some software won’t work properly.

Conclusions

The i780 is a good business device with wide possibilities for entering data. Note that if you will only be using the Latin alphabet, you’ll be fine; otherwise, the QWERTY keyboard will be mostly useless to you as it’s very doubtful that Samsung will manage to localize it.

The Nokia 888 communicator phone

Nokia 888 communicator phone
Nokia had some ambitious plans to produce a transformable cellphone that would be called the Morph, which would have used nano technology to produce flexible electronic components that could alter their own shapes to suit the users’ needs. But now the Nokia 888 communicator which was proposed and designed by Tamer Nakisci, would be the way to make it come true.

The 888 is said to feature a flexible touch screen and speech recognition system. Liquid batteries allow bending flexibility. It’s also got a completely new feature called E-motions. (electronical motions) E-motions allows you to send or receive forms to or from friends. For instance, you could send your girlfriend a heart shape that would make her cellphone turn into a heart icon. It will probably take years, but I can’t wait to see it.

star trek communicator: kirk to geek, come in?

What die-hard Trekkie could possibly walk around without a communicator? Now you can own this nifty remake of the original 23rd-century Starfleet communicator from the 1960s TV classic.

Star Trek Communicator

The modern-day replica offers up blinking lights and sounds just like the original Starfleet-issue communications gizmo. It’s even got a cool moving moire effect, making it even more retro-fabulous. I also love the “Hailing” feature, which lets you press a button on the face, flip the metal grill closed, and receive a call back from the Enterprise a few seconds later.

It’s loaded with over 20 phrases and sound effects from the classic Trek universe, including original sound samples from the TV show. While it’s not actually functional for two-way communications, it would be cool to crack one open and stuff your cell phone inside of it. I’d love to walk down the street making a call with one of these in my hand. After all, who needs Bluetooth headsets when you’ve got one of these?

The Star Trek Classic Communicator is available now from ThinkGeek for $29.99.
