If you are like me, you were hoping to be bowled over by this years fresh crop of phones being unveiled across the Atlantic at the MWC (Mobile World Congress) in Barcelona, Spain. The biggest question on my mind is this: who is raising the bar? When the Apple made it clear the rumors of their entry into the phone market were true, many analysts predicted they couldn’t hack this tough road. Since those predictions, we’ve waited for a response. Is there anything debuting this year that will make us stand in line for? Here are the contestants:

Nokia’s N96 - Many would agree, this is the phone to beat, with tons of features. But does it have a “superstar qualities”? The official news on this broke yesterday and I am still pretty excited about it:
Featuring a sexy 2.8” display, the N96 not only has 16GB internal memory but adds a microSDHC slot for even more storage. And storage you will want thanks to its DVBh live mobile TV and 5MP camera with Carl Zeiss lens. It also sports A-GPS and Nokia’s mapping software. Rounding out the list are 3D Speakers and WiFi. Hot.

Next up, meet the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1. Built by HTC, this phone looks mighty impressive. Our Robert Nelson had this to say:
Just to start it’s running Windows Mobile 6 with a full slide-out arc-sliding QWERTY keyboard with 4-way key and optical joystick. The X1 along with the XPERIA lineup will be focusing on the growing need for mobile web communication and multimedia entertainment. The X1 features has a metal-finish body with a 3-inch wide VGA 800 x 480 touchscreen display, GPS, Wi-Fi, A2DP Bluetooth, a 3.2-megapixel camera with a microSD card slot for additional storage.
How about a cheaper touchscreen phone? That seems to be what HTC was thinking on the new P3470. Svelte good looks and a presumed lower price are its features, but at what cost to performance? Our Robert Nelson points out the lack of a 3G capable radios seems like a loser but adds:
Overall it seems like the P3470 will offer a decent set of specs along with being a nice looking phone, much better than that spy shot image we first saw back in January. The HTC P3470 features a 2.8-inch QVGA display, 200MHz CPU, 256MB ROM, 128MB RAM, Bluetooth 2.0, microSD card slot and a built-in GPS with TomTom Navigator 6.
And then there is the LG KF700there is the LG KF700. Giving you the option of 3 ways to input data: touchscreen, numberpad and shortcut dial; can that be a winning combo?
In addition to its swanky touchscreen and slide out number pad, LG says it’s users needed another way to interact with the phone. The idea is, this phone has so many features, that easy navigation is key. LG says users don’t want to diddle their time away in complicated menus, so the 3 input options allow users to figure out which method suits them best.
Any of these make you want to wait for one? Even just buy one vs. anything else on the market? Heard enough about folks comparing everything to the iPhone or just me comparing everything to the iPhone? Have your say in the comments below.

So, you’ve got an outstanding ticket from talking while behind the wheel in Chicago, do you? Meet attorney Blake Horwitz, who is now likely to be the best friend you don’t even know. Reportedly, Mr. Horwitz is suing the city and claiming that arrests of citizens caught driving and talking were in fact illegal, and furthermore, he’s demanding that Chicago “dismiss any outstanding tickets and refund almost $2 million in fines collected since 2005.” Apparently, the actual law that prevents users from yapping and motoring requires that the city erect signs that instruct drivers not to converse while driving, yet such signs have purportedly not been posted across Chi-town. The devil’s in the details, we suppose.

Heads up, Xbox 360 tinkerers — it appears that Microsoft is bringing out the ban hammer once again. According to a thread on an Xbox-Scene forum, users are having their Live wrists slapped left, right, and center due to “bad discs” (i.e., non 1:1 copies of games). Initially, the problem seemed to be modified DVD firmware, but it now appears the cause is due to game data that isn’t properly copied, or has been “touched” in some manner. Keep in mind, these are console bans, as opposed to Live account bans, which is a minor amount of good news. The forums are abuzz with profane indictments of Microsoft and calls for heads on platters (okay, it’s not that bad) — but mostly everyone is just waiting to see where the next hit will come from. You’ve been warned, folks.

We may not mind having to do without our precious Nintendo DS and wireless cans for awhile if there’s in-flight WiFi to keep us occupied, but until then, this new measure is sure to annoy. Reportedly, “passengers on commercial planes [in Japan] are no longer allowed to play games using wireless connections with handheld consoles,” which of course would include the DS and Sony’s PSP. Moreover, it was said that folks were also not allowed to use personal headphones and mice that were cordless, further cramping our ability to slip into a personal electronic heaven while cruising the friendly skies. Ah well, here’s to hoping that the attendants aren’t exactly strict with the new rules, eh?

Arnold Schwarzenegger isn’t as much fun as a Governor as he was in The Terminator… just ask California’s teen drivers. The former action movie star has signed a new bill — which we told you about in August — into law, making it illegal for anyone aged 16 or 17 to use a mobile phone, pager, laptop, or handheld computer while driving a vehicle. Effective July 1, 2008 (the same day that California’s ban on non-hands-free mobile-use while driving takes effect), the state will begin to fine offenders $20 for their first incident, and $50 for each recurrent violation. The law is targeting teen drivers due to the wealth of statistics that demonstrate young motorists are more likely to end up in car accidents which result in death. According to reports, 13.6-percent of all fatal accidents are caused by teenagers, and studies show that car crashes are the leading cause of death for people between the ages of 16-19. “The simple fact is that teenage drivers are more easily distracted,” said Schwarzenegger in a statement, adding, “We want to eliminate any extra distractions so they can focus on paying attention to the road and being good drivers.” He then paused and remarked, “We just don’t want to say ‘Hasta la vista, baby’ to young drivers anymore.”

We can’t even imagine what would happen here in the US of A if our government suddenly stopped everyone under the age of 16 from chatting it up on a mobile, but it looks like we just may find out how it goes down overseas when Karnataka, India does just that. Reportedly, its government is going to “ban cellphone use by children less than 16 years on the basis of advice of medical experts,” and while specifics weren’t divulged, apparently someone up high believes that “prolonged use of [handsets] by teenagers does affect their health” in an adverse way. Additionally, mobile dealers will no longer be allowed to sell handsets to youngsters under 16, and while a hard date for the ban hasn’t been announced just yet, notification should be “issued soon.”

What a system we live in. After having multiple requests denied, Qualcomm (or at least those third-parties using its 3G chipsets) was just granted a stay which again opens the door for the US import of Qualcomm-based handsets. Right, those same handsets banned by the ITC at the request of Broadcom on June 7th. In essence, the ruling means that Qualcomm can not import phones but others — namely, Motorola, Samsung, T-Mobile, LG, AT&T — can. Note, this isn’t a reversal of the original decision and only remains in effect pending appeal. In other words, this is nowhere near to being over.

California certainly won’t go down as the first place to ban cellphones whilst driving, but if Governor Schwarzenegger signs a new bill into law, mobiles won’t be the only thing teens can’t operate while behind the wheel after July 1, 2008. The bill, which was overwhelmingly approved by the Assembly, prevents anyone “under the age of 18 from using their cellphone,” even with handsfree devices; as if that wasn’t enough, any “mobile service device” — such as “walkie-talkies, pagers, two-way messaging devices, PDAs, and laptops” — will also be illegal for teens under 18 to use while driving. If signed into law, violators will reportedly be fined “$20 for the first offense, and $50 for subsequent offenses with no violation points on the driver’s record.”
