Rumors have been floating around about this phone since Barcelona and we’ve still nothing from Sony Ericsson. Now, a new photo is making the rounds looking like a pretty real, smartly dressed business phone. Reportedly known as BeiBei, these new images raise more questions than they answer but actual facts are few. Here is what we have so far:
- Touchscreen phone
- Wi-Fi
- Part of the Walkman series
- Symbian OS 9.3 with the new UIQ 3.3 user interface (with Demand Paging support)
- Oddly small touchscreen and button overkill (just look at them all!)
Gaming? Extra functionality? What is the deal with all those buttons? More on BeiBei as it comes.

We don’t expect BenQ to come up with a mobile phone that could match up to industry leaders such as the iPhone or BlackBerry, but if it wants to make its presence felt in the mobile market, it should at least come up with a mobile phone that has something innovative to offer. We’re not saying that BenQ’s newly launched C36 mobile handset has nothing to offer, by all means it has several nifty features. But how we wish it could offer something more.
Anyway, BenQ’s latest mobile handset, the C36 seems to be confused in what it wants to offer to the users. For one, the C36 is touting “a rocking MP3 player” with FM radio that can record on-air programs. It even has dual speakers for letting users share what they are listening to with their friends. Then it brags about a big 2-inch screen which is said to be perfect for viewing photos and video that users can take using the phone’s 1.3-megapixel camera/webcam. It even adds an e-book reader and photo editor to its line up of features as well as a microSD card slot for storage expansion.
If not for the 2.4 hours talk time and 180 hours stand by time listed on its data specifications, we would have mistaken the C36 for a portable media player. Good thing the data sheet also listed the C36 as running on GSM900 and at 1800 MHz. Now those are certainly mobile phone features.
This not-so-spectacular mobile phone from BenQ will be available sometime this month in the Malaysian market before it gets released in other countries in June.

I wasn’t aware that there was such a mobile phone designed specifically for senior citizen users, until now, however, AHD has introduced the Emporia Life Plus mobile phone. If you’re wondering what the “Plus” is all about, that is to signify that this is already the second generation of the Emporia Life mobile phone.
For its second outtake on providing a mobile handset for the older generation of mobile phone users, AHD is giving them a simple-as-you-like handset that has all the basic features that would answer their mobile phone needs. These features include; a “super loud speaker”, oversized display and buttons, built-in flash light, hearing aid compatible ear piece and a quick ICE (In Case of Emergency) access key.
In addition, this mobile phone handset for our dear 50+ year old folks has a 250 hour standby time and weighs only 138g. Likewise, to make the Emporia Life Plus more appealing to our parents and possibly to our grandparents, AHD is releasing the handset with a retail price of around $287. It might not be that cheap, but hey, the Emporia Life Plus would be a useful device for staying in touch with our folks, right? The Emporia Life Plus will be available through PAYG sometime in May.

It just last week when Nokia introduced the 5220 and 5320 and we now see another three hitting the market. This time its the 6600 Fold, 6600 Slide and the 3600 Slide.
Nokia is promoting the new handsets as “beautiful to use” which would make on think that these new handsets have nothing much to offer except for an eye-pleasing design. True to the tagline, the first two phones which bear the same model number 6600 are your usual Nokia mid-range mobile handsets with nothing much to offer in terms of high-end functionality. Well, aside from the 3G support in the 6600 Fold and a 3.2-megapixel camera in the 6600 Slide. Even the GPS functionality of the 6600 is not an inherent feature but an optional one instead.
The 3600 Slide suffers the same fate as the first two handsets. Aside from the 3.2-megapixel camera, the 3600’s major feature is a background noise cancellation technology that makes up for a good music listening experience. In addition a TV-out feature was also included to connect the 3600 Slide to most TV sets.
Other than these main features, all three handsets are pretty much your standard Nokia mobile phone fare. The Nokia 6600 Fold, 6600 Slide and 3600 Slide will have retail prices of $430, $391 and $273 respectively. All three handsets will begin shipping in Europe during Q3 of this year.

Motorola has announced its third iteration of the Z8, but this time with the addition of 7.2Mbps HSDPA connectivity. Called the Z8m, besides it’s upgraded HSDPA (from 3.2 to 7.2 Mbps), the new phone sports the same features as the original Z8. A 2.2-inch QVGA display, 2-megapixel camera, 80MB internal memory, microSD card slot (4GB max), one-touch music access, photo viewer, Bluetooth, USB 2.0, and GPS rounds out the highlights of the phone. Design wise, the Z8m is a “kick-slider” that has a curved body, which supposedly better fits your face. Motorola says the bent shape enhances call quality since the microphone is closer to your face.
The Motorola Z8m is currently on sale through SK Telecom in South Korea, with a price tag of 500,000 Won or around $500 USD.

As we mentioned just yesterday, and with little surprise Sony Ericsson has officially announced the G502, and I say officially because the folks over at the Unofficial Sony Ericsson Blog sort of beat them to the punch with an early announcement.
With this there is not much we do not already know, but the G502 is an “affordable” HSDPA candybar style handset that is touting some decent features. The G502 will feature a 2-inch 240 x 320 pixel resolution display, Bluetooth, 2-megapixel camera, an FM radio, RSS support, automatic email setup, Access NetFront Browser, Exchange ActiveSync support and has Google Maps for Mobile pre-installed. In addition the G502 has 32MB of internal memory with a Memory Stick Micro card slot for additional storage.
The G502 is expected to hit selected markets during the second quarter of 2008 and will be available in your choice of Champagne Black or Brilliant Hazel. Keep reading for a few more pics of the G502…

The Nokia 6212 Classic is obviously not about the looks. And with a 2-megapixel camera, 2-inch TFT screen, 3G connectivity, built-in FM radio and MP3 player, it’s hard to say that it’s rocking high technology inside too. But what it does have that separates it from the gajillion other mid-level market handsets out there is the fact that it has integrated NFC or Near-Field Communications technology, which enables it to connect to other NFC-enabled devices and make content transfers easier than ever.
NFC-capable handsets such as the Nokia 6212 classic, according to Jeremy Belostock, the Head of Near Field Communications in Nokia, are set to change the way mobile phone users interact with devices and services in their surroundings. Other than being an NFC-enabled handset that can exchange files like photos and MP3’s with other NFC-enabled devices by being near then and just one touch, you can also make payments with it by having it scanned by a sensor of sorts. And while I’m sure this will save some time for more than a few people, it’s a whole new kind of technology that the not-so-tech-savvy are going to have to learn to appreciate. Which could be bad news, depending on how you look at it.
The Nokia 6212 Classic is set to be released by Q3 2008 for about $320 USD. And with other features like support for MicroSD cards up to 2GB of memory and Nokia’s well loved UI, it’s a safe bet for your next budget handset.
