Invented by a group of Silicon Valley engineers, the Readybot Robot is designed to clean up your kitchen. The goal of the project is to find out how much of an average kitchen the robot can clean. Right now, Readybot can take care of 30-40% of daily chores and the team believes that with more programming, they can get that up to 50% in another year. Eventually it will be at 80%. The prototype is more or less, a white enamel box with wheels, with two human-sized arms and chrome accents.
The robot fits in the same counter space as a dishwasher. After activation, he rolls out, deploys several antenna-type cameras, and raises itself up to human height, then gets to work. No info on availability yet, but very soon we are all going to have these in our home. I guess it’s a bit nice to know that now they can kill you dead, drag you into their dishwasher sized hole and clean up your disemboweled parts.
Homes will be thoroughly cleaned of dirt as well as human scum. Nay, the world….I for one am willing to keep my home spotless in the hopes that I might be spared to blog another day.

Someone had to do it eventually. The question is why? Because they can, is enough of a reason apparently. They took a simple 800dpi laser mouse with scroll wheel and combined it with a miniature vacuum cleaner. It’s got a power switch on the side for turning the vacuum function on and off. Problem is this mouse needs to be connected to a USB port in order to get enough power to run the motor.
The dust reservoir can be accessed in the back-end of the mouse, but being so small, you would probably need to empty it very often. If you are a real clean freak, this is the mouse for you. You’ll be able to clean your mousepad as you click.

Right on cue, it’s being reported that Apple and Fox have indeed agreed on an iTunes movie deal, and while details are admittedly scant at the moment, chances are Stevie J. will get to the nitty gritty come Macworld. What we do know, however, is that the alleged partnership will enable iTunes users to rent new Fox DVD releases and keep them around “for a limited time,” though pricing figures weren’t speculated upon. Additionally, it sounds like Fox will be spreading its digital file inclusion from select titles to all flicks, giving DVD purchasers a FairPlay protected file that can easily be transferred (read: without third-party transcoding software) to a computer and / or iPod for later viewing. As expected, both firms declined to comment on the reports, but all the minutiae you can stand will likely start flowing in just a few weeks.

Don’t look now, but it seems that three rivals in the UK have found enough love in their hearts (or promise for profitability) to team up for the good of the consumer. Reportedly, the BBC, ITV and Channel 4 will be joining hands in order to deliver an on-demand service that hopes to “bring together hundreds of hours of television programs in one place” — a collaborative effort once known as Project Kangaroo. Of course, the grand idea still has to be approved by the BBC Trust and other broadcasters’ boards, and an official name for the service still has to be thought up, but at least the wheels are apparently turning, right? We’re hearing that content from the trio will be available for “free download, streaming, rental and purchase via the internet, with expansion onto other platforms planned,” and just in case you were curious, the iPlayer, ITV’s catch-up service and Channel 4oD will indeed coexist with the new aggregator. Hang tight UK, the to-be-named service is set to go live sometime next year should things pan out nicely.

Chances are, you had forgotten all about Sony and NXP’s little initiative to cooperate on a NFC (near-field communications) standard, but the two seem to have finally worked out all the kinks and are ready to move forward. The joint venture, dubbed Moversa, will seek to “drive global adoption of contactless smart card applications in mobile phones,” and it’s already planning to develop, produce and market a Universal Secure Access Module (U-SAM) that “incorporates both MIFARE and FeliCa operating systems and applications.” Essentially, the duo is hoping to accelerate the adoption of integrated contactless support, which would enable users to make payments (among other things) easily via their handset. If you’re curious about availability, we’re hearing that samples should be shipped out in mid-2008, but commercial deployments aren’t scheduled to happen until the end of next year.

After buddying up with IBM earlier this year on a 32-nanometer semiconductor, Infineon is now teaming with none other than Intel to produce high-density (HD) SIM cards. Announced today at the Cartes Trade Show in Paris, the agreement will spark a “strategic technology collaboration” which will see Infineon producing modular chip solutions while Intel offers up memory capacities from 4MB to 64MB. More specifically, a 32-bit security microcontroller will be provided by Infineon, while the partnership’s other half throws in its “leading-edge flash memory technologies, capabilities and manufacturing.” Apparently, the HD SIM will play nice with “data-intensive mobile applications, services and over-the-air downloads” which are likely to become more pervasive in the coming years, and current market research shows that these very devices will account for “six- to eight-percent of the total SIM card market in 2010.” As for availability, look for samples to land in Q2 of next year, but don’t expect ‘em to be manufactured en masse until the first half of 2009.

You know what they say: nothing gets you over the last one like the next one. Apparently, Disney is totally signed on to the aforementioned mantra, as just under seven weeks after Disney Mobile hung its US-based ears in shame, the Japanese unit of Walt Disney Company will reportedly be firing up similar operations in its neck of the woods. Apparently, the outfit has “reached a basic agreement” with Softbank Mobile to lease telecom networks and start providing nationwide service to those interested. Furthermore, it will be buddying up with Softbank to “develop handsets and consign its output to other companies,” and if all goes to plan, Disney hopes to sign up “more than one million subscribers.” Oh, and if that wasn’t enough to make you scrounge up that decade-old Mickey Mouse figurine and give it a long overdue hug, users of the service will also have exclusive access to “animated film downloads.” Regrettably, there’s no word on an actual launch date just yet, but we’ll be keeping a (grossly oversized) set of ears to the ground.

Yes, that’s “Buy One, Give One” for those out of the loop, and for the sect willing to fork out $399 in order to claim an OLPC XO of their own and have one donated too, T-Mobile is announcing that it will give you a solid year of HotSpot access gratis. The partnership is hoping to encourage participation in the philanthropic campaign, but this is most certainly not the first time T-Mobile has handed out free WiFi in order to get its name out there. Nevertheless, if this tidbit somehow pushes you into the buyers’ camp, you can place an order between November 12th - 26th and calmly anxiously await your new machine along with “information on how to activate the one year of complimentary HotSpot service.” Go on, you know it’s the perfect excuse to pull the trigger, and besides, that warm, fuzzy feeling you’ll have will totally justify the hit to your checking account.
