AT&T has announced that their 10,000 WiFi hotspots will, from now on, be free of charge to all their subscribers with mobile internet. While the offer was only available to their premium broadband services before, it’s now open to the general public. The company is, however, thinking of filtering content passing through P2P networks due to the illegal sharing of copyrighted files. There’s no mention of any specific action as of yet, although it’ll be interesting to see what AT&T will come up with. In a similar vein, AT&T will also soon offer a high-speed internet access of up to 10Mbps in speed. It will cost US$55 per month and will only be available to subscribers of U-verse, their Internet Protocol-based television service.

In the UK, researchers are aiming to develop a technology which would let us use our mobile phones as mouse for public displays. The idea is to use the phone and control the PC screen via moving the phone itself or using a style via touch screen phones. With the new technology, people will be able to scroll screens even in public places to check out air plane tickets or movie schedules, for example. The technology would work as follows: via Bluetooth, the cell phone would relay its coordinates to the computer. The computer then establishes the coordinates and thereby, lets the phone control the interface by knowing exactly what the phone could see. As of current, researchers have already developed the software for Windows Mobile and Symbian phones, although it is still in its infancy. It’s interesting what would come off of this technology in the future. Of course, this increases the chance for pranksters randomly scrolling public displays. But that’s a price the technology has to pay.

Japan mobile network company, SoftBank, aims to pirate more users from rivals DoCoMo and KDDI by launching a new campaign which would start on February 1 and end on May 31. The plan is to scrap their monthly basic fee for students from grade school until college which costs US$9 per month. The new subscribers will still be subject to a monthly charge of US$3 for basic text messaging and web browsing though. But considering that 3 bucks is pretty much loose change in Japan, the service is practically free. The company says they’re taking the loss as an investment because they’re earning more in the long run. List this as one of the reasons why we want to move Japan.
