Current owners of the cute-looking Chumby device will be glad to hear new features are on the way. In fact, the multimedia device will soon be equipped with additional music-listening features.
This clock radio that can connect to the Internet and is wrapped in leather will let you connect to radio stations you create by using the Pandora service. Plus, you can stream music videos by means of the Avot Media’s tool. Additional features include music news from the likes of UsMagazine.com and RollingStone.com.
So there you have it, folks. This isn’t life-altering, or anything, but it is certainly great news for those with a Chumby that have been looking to get more out of the device.

Chumby has been around for some time now, and the team behind it are keeping their promise to release updated features for the squidgy touchscreen companion. The latest is support for Pandora radio, the streaming online music service that creates custom ’stations’ based on your favorite tracks. Pandora on Chumby allows you to log into you account, listen to existing stations and create new ones, with playback through the integrated speakers.

Pandora can be set as the alarm clock sound, so you can be woken with a track in the style of your choosing. All of the usual online Pandora controls are apparently there, including the ability to mark currently playing songs as liked or not liked (which affects what music is picked for you next), bookmark them for later research, and a QuickMix function if you don’t want to get too involved.
Chumby is priced at $179.95 and available in three different colors. It relies on a WiFi network for connectivity. Currently the Pandora widget is yet to show up in the download section, but presumably existing owners will be able to update their Chumby with it soon. Update: Pandora shows up as a music source, not a widget; simply restart your Chumby and it will update with the new Pandora source. You can find it in the Music menu.

Hope all of you had a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend. I sure had a nice relaxing time at home this weekend (these 3 day weekends are awesome but go by way too quickly if you ask me). Couple of notable things from this weekend:
- Watched Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and well.. it was OK. It wasn’t amazing and it wasn’t horrible.. but it was just OK. Now granted, I had lower expectations already going into the flick but somehow, the magic was gone in my opinion. I suppose it had something to do with the fact that I grew up with Indiana Jones (and with Star Wars etc), and now, it’s just not quite the same anymore (especially in light of how good Iron Man is). Oh well - here’s hoping we end the Indiana Jones movies for good… And please.. let’s not see Shia as a potential Harrison Ford replacement down the road.
- Continued to play with the Chumby over the weekend and it’s just a blast. I’m looking into how hard (or easy) it is to create a widget for the Chumby right now but overall - it’s a very cool (and cute) device. Can I recommend it for everyone out there? I want to say yes but at around $180, I’m not sure yet that I can. I only wish I had many more widgets to put on the darn thing! Stay tuned for a full review
- Finally, I took advantage of the Memorial Day sales this weekend and finally picked up an HP MediaSmart EX470 Windows Home Server box. I’ve been talking about picking one up for months now but finally got around to doing so yesterday. I also purchased a 1 TB drive to increase the default 500GB of space on the EX470. So far so good. I’ve been busy copying all of my files and multimedia content to the EX470 (it’s a lot of data) and also installing the Windows Home Server Connector software on my client Windows PC. My main work desktop was successfully backed up last night while I slept. Love it - that’s how backup should work - easily, quickly, and quickly. Stay tuned for a review of this bad boy shortly too!
- I have a lot of other products to talk about over the next few weeks also. I’ve got a new HP Slimline box to review (it’s acting as our main Windows Media Center box now - it replaced the Apple box I had created a few months back), a new HP Pavilion notebook to review, and a couple of other odds and ends to talk about.
Have a wonderful week everyone!

A Chumby has been sighted.
Yes.. a Chumby is here at Krunker.com and I’m absolutely loving it. I’ve created a virtual Chumby so you can see the widgets I’m viewing on my Chumby right now.
Stay tuned for a review of the Chumby - in the meantime, here are some early pics of the Chumby. Enjoy!

Would you like to have a Chumby by your bed? or perhaps on your kitchen counter while you cook? Or maybe on your office desk while you do your um… work. OK.. so what the heck is the Chumby you might be wondering? It’s best described as a Internet-connected device which delivers information in the form of widgets.. and we mean a lot of widgets! You simply plug the Chumby in, connect it to your wireless network and then go to your PC to choose your favorite widgets. There are over 700 widgets spanning over 30 different categories - simply choose the widgets you want to run on your Chumby and then sit back and enjoy the content as it’s delivered to you via the Chumby.
The Chumby is potentially a great bedroom device because it comes with a customizable alarm clock. Wake up to music, news, or whatever! Other things you can do with the Chumby include listening to music/podcasts, viewing the weather report, viewing online photos, catching up with your friends via social networks, reading the news/entertainment/sports, viewing classifieds, and playing games.
For the geeks out there, the specs on the Chumby are as follows:
- 3.5 inch LCD color touchscreen display
- Two external USB 2.0 ports
- 350 MHz ARM processor
- 64MB SDRAM
- 64MB ROM
- Stereo 2Watt speakers
- Headphone output
- Squeeze sensor
- Accelerometer (motion sensor)
- Leather casing
- AC adapter included
- Wi-Fi connectivity
- Over-the-air software updates
David Pogue reviews the Chumby over at the New York Times here and had this to say:
So how, then, do you define the Chumby?
Nobody quite knows, but it sure is a lot of fun.
You can purchase a Chumby here on their website for $179.95. There are three colors - latte, basic black, and pearl.
One last thought.. doesn’t the Chumby look like the old 3COM Audrey device? Hmm… a device ahead of its time?

Beanbag-like internet appliance and general squishy WiFi companion chumby will soon be able to do more than alert you to the weather and bring you the latest 3G iPhone news courtesy of your RSS feeds. In a deal with Canadian games studio Albino Blacksheep, who specialise in Flash animation and gaming, chumby owners will be able to play selected titles from the studio using the touchscreen and accelerometer tilt-sensor interface. Rotating, shaking and prodding chumby will allow gamers to navigate through tunnels, chase a ball and even direct missiles.

“Now we can merge the convenience of casual gaming and intuitive motion to provide a unique gaming experience on a device right on your desk, coffee table, or night stand. This new slate of Albino Blacksheep games is a fantastic addition to the already-existing 40+ games available on the Chumby Network” Stephen Tomlin, CEO and founder, Chumby Industries
The titles include Bounce, Tumbler, Missile 3D, the Line Game and Chameleon, and Albino Blacksheep worked with UK-based game developers Everybody Panic! to tweak them to the chumby’s unique interface. Albino Blacksheep are calling it “more intuitive” than playing with buttons. There are apparently already in excess of forty games from other sources available for chumby owners to download.
Chumby Industries have also released an animation widget, especially for Albino Blacksheep’s animations. Users will be able to browse a list of titles and play them on the chumby’s display. The widget can be downloaded from the chumby network.

That little cuddly, bean-bag like Chumby computer device we had talked about last year is finally available for sale to everyone. We thought it would hit sometime last fall but it looks like it took a little longer.
The Chumby comes in 3 colors of latte, black or pearl with a retail price of $179.95. The small device comes with a customizable Linux OS and WiFi bringing it updates on a frequent basis according to the company. Among the many built-in features it can bring in news and weather information, work as an alarm clock, play music, view photos and email along with whatever else you’d like to make it do yourself.
Some of the highlighted specs for little Chumby include a 3.5″ LCD display, two USB ports, a squeeze sensor in that squishy back end, a motion sensor and 64MB of internal memory, among others.
