China Mobile’s Lenovo-built, Android-powered Ophone has been all but confirmed, and yet here it is today in more awesome live photos.
There’s no denying that the Lenovo Ophone is indeed sexy, far more sexier than the G1, and quite possibly even sleeker than the iPhone itself. But how well it really works still remains a mystery. We’ll find out for sure once either Lenovo or China Mobile spill out official details regarding it.

Of course, it’s also possible that an insider would find a way to get his hands on this handset, and test it out for us in advance. But until that happens, we’ll just have to settle on these live photos for now.

Frankly speaking, I’d never expected such a beautifully designed handset from Lenovo, but it’s right here to impress us. This is the Lenovo’s Android phone called OPhone. OPhone is basically a codename for phones, which will be based on China Mobile’s OMS (Open Mobile System) that is essentially Android + TD SCDMA (China’s home-grown 3G standard). Featuring a hardware QWERTY, the OPhone features good looking dot buttons just below the display. This Android-powered touchscreen handset will come with support and applications for the carrier’s TD-SCDMA 3G network. Unfortunately, I don’t see any chances for the OPhone to cross the Chinese boundaries.

Following the recent trend of “everybody wanting to create their own smartphone OS” syndrome (i.e. Apple’s mobile OS X, Google’s Android, Nokia’s open-source Symbian), China Mobile is said to be, guess what? Working on one of their own.
Rumor has it that China Mobile is developing an operating system for TD-SCDMA mobile phones, and that it will be based on the open-source Google Android platform. In Japan, NTT DoCoMo is doing something similar.

China Mobile’s OS is intended to run on a new device, called the Onephone. (No, not that 01.)
Inside sources claim that, “The system… will integrate some of [China Mobile's] own applications designed with the TD-SCDMA network in mind, and will be similar to the iPhone in concept.” Prototype handsets currently under development are called ‘Ophones’, and it is said that the hardware may be supplied by manufacturer Lenovo.
As to why China Mobile is doing this, sources say that the move can be seen as “an attempt to reassert and extend its dominance over the mobile internet industry chain, making it difficult for others to get a foothold on anything other than China Mobile’s terms in the future.”
It figures, knowing how big the Chinese mobile phone market is, after all.

China Mobile’s refusal to bow down to Apple’s domineering ways, as far as bringing the iPhone 3G to market in China is concerned, has been well documented. Well, it looks like the situation with China Mobile and Apple is about to change, but not in the way that everyone has expected.
According a report from the Daiwa Institute of Research being cited by the South China Morning Post, Apple is prepping a 3G and Wi-Fi-less version of the iPhone for the Chinese market. Apple’s first generation iPhone did not have 3G when an estimated 400,000 users in China Mobile’s network purchased it, so that wouldn’t be a problem. However, the absence of Wi-Fi could be a deal breaker for some.

This is said to be due to China Mobile’s insistence that its users should only use its own proprietary TD-SCDMA network, instead of the standard 3G format that everyone else in the world is using.
Calvin Huang, a Daiwa analyst, said that Hon Hai Precision Industry is waiting for verification from the mainland before shipping these 3G and Wi-Fi-less iPhones. Suddenly, being Chinese and waiting for the iPhone doesn’t seem so exciting.

Apple has been able to talk at least 70 countries into being part of the global iPhone rollout later this year, but surprisingly China will have no part in this. Apple will lose a significant chunk of revenue if they can’t get the largest mobile phone market to play nice with them. Good thing for Apple, the road to China may have finally swung open.
Because the iPhone 3G will not be sold under the same terms as the first-gen model, that is, without revenure sharing between Apple and the telcos, China’s top mobile operator may finally jump in on the iPhone cake. A spokesperson from China Mobile Ltd says the “biggest hurdle” is finally cleared, and the remaining issue now has something to do with practicality.

China Mobile spokeswoman Rainie Lei’s statement goes:
“Apple is no longer insisting on a revenue-sharing policy, so the biggest hurdle for China Mobile to bring in the iPhone has been cleared, but there are practical issues still to be resolved.”
And as such, China Mobile is now looking into bringing the iPhone to China, and apparently is more open to just subsidizing it instead of sharing their revenues with Apple.
An iPhone deal for China has not been sealed yet, though, so there’s still no way to know when the iPhone will finally be released there. But it’s almost certain to happen later this year, with Russia possibly jumping in on the iPhone bandwagon as well.
