Intelligent Li-ION battery developed by NTT DoCoMo

Asmita:

NTT DoCoMo exhibited its intelligent Li-ION battery for mobile phones created in collaboration with Mitsumi Electric during the Wireless Japan 2008 conference held earlier this July. The technology basically aims at detecting glitches within the Li-ION battery and relay it to the user ASAP. Using an 8-bit microcomputer embedded onto the pack, the app can monitor battery conditions as current, voltage, temperature, state of deterioration, remaining battery level.

Cellphones to get E Ink electronic paper displays soon

Asmita:

Taking electronic paper technology one step ahead, E Ink is all set to introduce E Ink Vixplex Imaging Film for the outer display in future clamshell handsets. Since e-ink only consumes power when the image changes, the technology can help cellphone makers enhance their exterior display screens without cutting down on battery life. The first two handsets that are set to get revolutionary technology are the Hitachi W61 and the Casio Model G’zOne. Clearly visible even under direct sunlight, the displays give the user a viewing angle of up to 180-degrees. For people who love to personalize their phones, this could be a real boon.

Patent application shows Microsoft’s new mobile phone/multimedia player/notebook PC

Asmita:

If pictures really can say a thousand words, this one probably is yelling out a whole freaking book! Check out the latest patent app submitted by Microsoft that shows a morphing cellphone with a slide-out keyboard, numeric keypad and flip-up display that can be used as a mobile phone when closed, as a multi-media player when screen is opened and as a portable PC when the screen is opened and the keyboard is extended. The application reading is ever so confusing as well, stating that “in device mode, the computing system truly assumes the look and feel of a less intimidating multi-media device, rather than that of a sometimes more intimidating computer,” which really leads us to believe that MS either have a truly revolutionary mobile PC up their sleeve or the ugliest looking experimental handset in the history of the world!

New phone measures CO2, tells you when you’re in a polluted zone

Asmita:

With the growing awareness about greenhouse gases and all that crap, it was only a matter of time before someone invented a cellphone that could tell you when your environment was getting too toxic for your own health. We’re just glad Blue Telephony and GPS Group Italia decided to collaborate on making phones that can actually sense and display the levels of CO2 in the users’ vicinity. Featuring “integrated sensor technologies”, the proposed cellphone promises to effectively gauge and alert cellphone users about the levels of CO2 present in a particular place and we’re almost sure our favorite spots around town including restaurants, shopping centers or maybe even lake and riversides might show up on the red zone!
