Having only recently announced that they will no longer be offering BlackBerry Connect on its E-series handsets, Nokia have officially released a beta version of their own email service named, surprisingly, Nokia Email. The service looks to key in end consumers by enabling them to receive emails directly on their Nokia handsets. The service has been launched without much fanfare though once off beta testing, the company plans to collaborate with carriers and charge the user a monthly subscription fee for the use of the service. No further details are available on the deal for the moment though we’re sure to get more reviews very, very soon.

In a bid to add more GPS functionality to the new iPhone, Apple is beta testing iPhone’s 2.1 firmware with a new version of the iPhone SDK being seeded as well. According to initial reports, Apple is looking to expand core functions with facilities like being able to track what direction you’re moving in, and how fast, perhaps signaling a turn-by-turn GPS app on the iPhone 3G in the near future. For the moment though, the new SDK can’t be used for submitting applications to the App Store. Though this version of the software is still under testing, the developments promise a better and fiercer iPhone 3G in the not so far future which of course is always good for the end user!

Show me a person who isn’t interested in saving money and I’ll show you a ghost! iPhone users now have the super economy scheme available to them where they can use the AOL Instant Messenger on their phone to send and receive SMS messages without paying for a plan or individual messages. The messenger is now available for download in the iPhone’s App Store and to start making use of the economic service, you’ll have to download and start it up. To send a free text message to a pal whose number is, say, (617) 555-6868, then all you have to do is send an IM to +16175556868. A confirmation message from AOL will tell you that your message has been sent, and if your pal replies reply you’ll receive it on your phone as an IM. This cool new feature will be even better when the notification service works on applications sometimes this fall. Neat innit?

One of the many media-pushing services shown at the opening of the iTunes App Store, ShoZu is perhaps the most efficient of them all with support for roughly 30 popular social sites and services. With Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, Photobucket, Blogger, Picasa, LiveJournal, Box.Net qipit, Snapfish, and SmugMug freely accepting uploaded text and images, ShoZu lets users make the best of the iPhone’s nice big screen and its organized structure. For people who upload frequently, an automate multiplatform-pushing can be activated by going online and adding up to ten child services to be copied each time media is posted to the parent service. That’s hot for networking addicts but since you still have to visit the ShoZu Web site to arrange for multi-pinging, we think there are some improvements to be made before it can truly be a stand-alone app on the iPhone.

Remember when a few years ago we were so thrilled to have cellphones that could flash the picture of the person calling you? Well, I guess its was about time that boring trend got an upgrade, and though we still don’t have live video of the person calling us, we have a new, uber-cool app called “VideosTone” released by this company called Fonetec. The app basically flashes your fav music video when a person calls you. Just add http://app.ifonetec.com source on your browser, and the app will be found in the Installer. Unfortunately the service is currently available for the iPhone only and you really need to subscribe to the costly service since the free version is, well, not bug-free!
