Nokia 2608 CDMA phone announced

Wondering where all the new low-end Nokia CDMA phones have gone? So am I, but I’ve managed to get wind of the latest one that’s been announced, the Nokia 2608.

The Nokia 2608 is nothing short of unremarkable. It seems the only thing about it that will catch anyone’s attention is its color: fuchsia with a pink stripe dead center (though it will also be available in silver with green and black with blue).

It really is just a simple CDMA handset that functions as a handheld device to handle your calls and SMS. It will also function as a modem, FM radio, voice recorder, flashlight, and mobile organizer.

It is expected to be released during the first quarter of 2009 in select markets outside the US, at a still unspecified price. See it in detail in the gallery posted below.

HTC Touch Pro finally available from Verizon, kind of expensive

Verizon may be a bit late in releasing the HTC Touch Pro (even Alltel outed it last week), but the handset is now finally available for purchase via the big V’s online store.

The price? $349.99, after a $70 rebate and the signing of a 2-yr agreement. A bit too much, I guess, considering the fact that Alltel is selling the Touch Pro for only $279.99 while AT&T offers it as HTC Fuze for $299.99.

You’d expect the Verizon HTC Touch Pro to have some extra features to compensate for the higher price, but from its description it doesn’t look like it has any.

So you’ll get the same Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional device with a VGA touchscreen display, GPS, Wi-Fi, full QWERTY keyboard, 3.2MP camera and so on. Plus, of course, some Verizon-only applications, like VZ Navigator and VZAppZone.

If the Touch Pro ain’t your thing, maybe Samsung Omnia is. And since this was already seen in Verizon’s stores, it should be launched pretty soon too, most probably for a price lower than the one of HTC’s WinMo handset.

FCC allows Verizon to buy Alltel – the new largest US mobile carrier is almost here

One of the main conditions for Verizon to complete the Alltel acquisition is, obviously, the approval of the Federal Communications Commission.

Or, better say, this was a condition, because today the FCC said “yes” to Alltel’s buyout by North America’s second largest mobile carrier.

The FCC has imposed some conditions to Verizon though. For example, the big V must honor all of Alltel’s existing roaming agreements for the next four years.

Anyway, since the Justice Department has also approved the acquisition, Verizon & Alltel will soon become one and form the largest US mobile operator, surpassing AT&T in terms of user base with around 10 million customers.

Verizon has to pay a total of $28.1 billion for Alltel – $5.9 billion in cash and $22.2 billion in assuming debt.

CDMA HTC Touch Diamond now available with RCom

HTC Touch Diamond CDMA

Reliance Communications (RCom) in association with HTC announced to bring the CDMA variant of Touch Diamond phone (P3051) to the Indian market. RCom says the phone is a small effort from them to bring state-of-the-art phones to their loyal customers. But with such an exorbitant price, I think their loyalty will surely take a hit. It costs a whopping Rs. 39,900 ($801), almost Rs. 13,000 ($261) premium over the GSM version. Somebody please give me Rs. 13K worth of reasons to buy this rather than the GSM Touch Diamond.

The feature set is the same which includes: Windows Mobile 6.1 Pro, 2.8-inch display, 4GB internal memory, TouchFLO 3D, 3.2-megapixel camera and GPS.

Nokia 2228 CDMA phone announced

Launching the 1606 flip phone in the US was not enough for Nokia today, as the Finnish manufacturer has also unveiled a new CDMA candybar, the Nokia 2228.

In the Finns’ words, the 2228 is a uniquely designed phone. Sadly, there is only one tiny, unclear image with the new device at the moment I’m writing this, so we can’t actually see how unique the handset is.

Anyway, let’s move on to the features of Nokia 2228. According to the info found at the Nokia Press Bulletin Board, the 2228 measures only 12 millimeters in thickness and it can be used as a modem to connect a PC to the Web.

Nokia 2228 also has a LED indicator light, which will flash when incoming calls or messages are waiting for you.

Other known features of the new candybar include:

Nokia 2228 will be launched before the end of 2008 in select CDMA markets, which most probably means the US too. Its price was not announced, but it’s said to be an affordable one. Logically, since the handset only offers entry-level capabilities.

AT&T pushing to make third-party devices work on its wireless network

The man behind AT&T exclusive U.S. iPhone deal with Apple, Glenn Lurie, has now set his eyes on new prey: third-party devices that should be made compatible with AT&T’s own cellular network.

The third-party devices in question include everything you can think of, from computers and digicams to car-navigation and entertainment systems, according to a report from Reuters. Lurie is looking to promote the inclusion of cellular links in these said devices, so that its users can be connected whenever, wherever.

Though this might sound like a great idea at first, it’s not exactly free of roadblocks to execution. First, many companies might not like the fact that AT&T will have a say in what features will and will not be included in their devices, as is the norm with handsets being released under carrier brand names. Also, Verizon Wireless and Sprint run networks that aren’t compatible with AT&T’s GSM network, so a standard has to be decided upon first.

But if AT&T ever manages to get this thing going, it could quite possibly revolutionize the way we use our mobile devices.

Verizon starts offering month-to-month contracts

Did you ever feel like you wanted to sign yourself up for a month’s worth of data, but not a year, let alone two or three? Just yesterday this seemed like a crazy idea, but not anymore since Verizon Wireless is making it a reality.

From now on, people who don’t want to get tied to Verizon in a full one-year or two-year contract will have the option to sign a month-to-month agreement (that’s what they call it) in which the commitment to the operator only lasts for a month, and there is no Early Termination Fee for terminating the agreement before the end of any month.

According to Verizon, all of the Nationwide Voice and Data plans will be available for both new and current contract customers using CDMA devices, only noting that contract customers must finish the terms of their currently existing contract before moving onto the new system.

This is a great new service, however it would mean that phones will then be sold for their full retail prices, without discounts and carrier subsidies. Call 1-800-2 JOIN IN or visit Verizon’s web site at the link below for more info.
