Aleratec launches second generation DVD/CD shredder

Aleratec CD/DVD ShredderSensitive and confidential information printed from our computers and stored on out portable hard drives and flash drives gets lots of attention. We shred paper, and can encrypt electronic data on portable storage. What many overlook though is security for data stored on CDs.

When it comes time to toss that CD or DVD out that has your company’s financial info on it, you don’t want to simply throw it in the trash can where anyone who finds it can pop it into a computer can see the info. You need to destroy the CD and Aleratec has a new CD/DVD Shredder that will do just that.

The gizmo is sort of like a heavy-duty paper shredder that cuts CDs and DVDs into four strips. The device has automatic on and off feature and the steel blades are completely enclosed. Once the disk is shredded, the data on it is no longer a concern to you. The DVD/CD Shredder retails for $44.99.

Brionvega RR226 record/CD/DVD combo does the robot

Brionvega RR226 record/CD/DVD combo does the robotJust look at that robot face on the Brionvega RR226. Who wouldn’t be charmed by that retro 60s ‘design? Both the RR226 and its 1965 counterpart, the Radiofonografo RR126, earned the nickname “musical component robots” due to that face, with it’s dials and speakers.

But it isn’t all about looks. Brionvega is known for creating superior decks with quality components. This one is no exception, combining a phonograph, radio, record player and a CD/DVD drive. In fact, the new model looks like a copy of the original, aside from the inclusion of the CD and DVD drive. No word on price yet, but we probably can’t afford it anyway.

Mobile banking service with USIM chips to be made available in Korea by November,

The concept of mobile banking isn’t new. It has been available in many parts of the world for several years now. You can access your bank account, transfer funds, pay your bills, all with the magic of your mobile phone in hand.

Yet some people still prefer to do it the old fashioned way: by going to ATM machines and punching their passcode on keys that look as old as time. Surely, these people will welcome change, right?

Well, at least those in Korea will soon have to. The sub-committee on Financial Digitization of the Bank of Korea has chosen the Universal Subscriber Identity Module or USIM to use the CD and ATM networks of all banks in the said country. It hasn’t provided clear details as to how exactly the service will work, but it says it could be made available in November at the earliest.

They did say, though, that USIM chips will be embedded in mobile phones and users will be able to download the service program, as well as their account information and password onto it. Users will then be able to conduct mobile banking by putting their mobile phones close to sensors in CD and ATMs.

It’s a great concept and convenient service, as long as you don’t misplace that mobile phone of yours.

giant led clock big enough to hold your cd collection

Now, most of us have moved on from compact discs to digital media players these days, but that doesn’t mean that we don’t still have to find a place to store our old CD collection, right?

This ingenious storage system doubles as a giant LED clock, so you’ll actually be getting some utility out of an otherwise single-purpose bookshelf. The oversize clock conceals red 7-segment LED displays for each digit in the edges of the storage cubes.

Giant LED CD Clock

Measuring in at a 28″ (w) x 14″ (h) x 5″ (d), you certainly won’t miss the time on this clock. And of course, if you no longer listen to CDs, you should be able to stack small books, DVDs, video games or Blu-Ray discs in the cubbyholes.

I haven’t found a U.S. retailer who carries these, but if you’re up for importing a bunch, you can put in a wholesale inquiry to it’s Hong Kong manufacturer, Anka.

Car visor plays everything, kills you dead

Car visor plays everything, kills you dead
This may be the last gadget you’ll ever buy. Both because it does everything and because it is the ultimate distraction leading to your fiery demise. At least you’ll be distracted while that tanker truck rams you. Not only can the visor play DVDs, audio and video files, it can play retro video games on its 7-inch LCD 16×9 widescreen display. Just hook up one or two gamepads that are included and you can play emulated 8-bit games. (You get several on an included disc).

It plays DVD, SVCD, VCD, DVCD, CD, CDG, CD-R and CD-RW discs, as well as digital media files stored in MP4, MP3, WMA or JPEG formats. You can even send game or movie audio to your car’s stereo thanks to a built-in FM transmitter. I’m hoping it’s only available as a passenger visor, for all of our sakes. If you’re ready to turn your car into wreckage, this will cost you just over $100.

CDs take a step backwards as 45RPM records

CDs take a step backwards as 45RPM records
Here’s a cool repurposing idea. It’s not very environmentally friendly, but it’s still awesome. You can reuse CDs as records. A guy named Aleks Kolkowski was at the UK’s Futuresonic festival last week and he brought his vintage record-cutting machine to carve sound tracks into old CDs and DVDs.

All people needed to do was bring an old disc and a sound file and he’d “overwrite” the CD with a track that can be played on a turntable. Pretty cool. Kinda pointless, sure, but it gives old turntables something to do.
