The Tomy Xiao digital camera with built-in Zink printer has gone on sale in the US, courtesy of importers AudioCubes. Resembling a Flip Mino with its upright stance, the Xiao has a 5-megapixel sensor and can instantly spit out 2 x 3-inch sticky-backed prints.

Built into the camera are multiple templates, borders and frames to let you customize your image before printing it. Prints themselves take around a minute to produce, but unlike a traditional Polaroid camera you do at least have the option of which shot to get a hard-copy of. The Zink paper itself costs around $12.99 for a pack of 30 (roughly 43 cents a print).
However the price of such impulsive convenience is high. While the Xiao is on sale in Japan for the equivalent of around $350, in the US it’ll cost you $499.99. It’s available in three colors: black, green and a particularly vibrant shade of pink.

If you haven’t seen PENTAX’s website recently, you might want to drop on by as the company launched a new rebranding campaign on Friday entitled “BE INTERESTING”. Developed by ad agency RPA, the new brand strategy centers around the following positioning - “independent spirits who see the world through a different lens.”
According to Jim Real, the Associate Creative Director/Copy at RPA, “The ‘BE INTERESTING’ direction came from a deep consumer insight we gained while getting to know the PENTAX brand and their loyalists. PENTAX users, and people who are naturally drawn to the brand, truly are independent spirits. They don’t follow. They decidedly beat their own drum. The campaign’s idea is to celebrate that independent spirit. And tie that spirit directly into PENTAX products”
Interesting concept – let’s see if this helps drive customer awareness and sales for PENTAX imaging equipment.

Ericsson AB of Sweden has already envisioned mobile phones of the future that could shoot Full HD video with a XGA resolution display screen. They seem to be on the right track as they have announced a new image sensor “Exmor” that could deliver up to 12.25-megapixel resolution. This new image sensor is mere 7.5 millimeters diagonally. They also have plans to roll out two other sensors, a 5.76-mm CMOS image sensor with 8.11-megapixel resolution and a 4.5-mm sensor with 5.15-megapixel resolution. They are claiming the new image sensors to deliver high-quality images. Furthermore, Sony announced to produce compact lenses, so that the cameras could be easily integrated with the phones of the future.

Sony have taken the tiny wraps off of their latest Exmor CMOS camera sensors for mobile devices. Now offering resolutions of 5.15, 8.11 and 12.25 megapixels, the three new sensors - IMX045PQ, IMX046PQ and IMX060PQ - are likely to find their way into upcoming cellphones. They’re also capable of high-definition video recording, the IMX045PQ and IMX046PQ at 1080-30p/720-30p and the IMX060PQ at 1080-27p/720-30p.
The 5.15-megapixel and 12.25-megapixel CMOS will be available in March next year. Meanwhile the 12.25-megapixel version will launch in November this year, though it’s unclear which, if any, manufacturers have signed up to use it in their mobile devices.
Sony have also announced two new lens assemblies, both with autofocus using a super-compact piezo driver. The 12.25-megapixel IU060F has a 28mm focal length equivalence, while the 8.11-megapixel IU046F has 35mm; both have F2.8 F-measure. They’ll be available in September and February 2009, respectively.

It seems like Samsung Techwin is going to split off their camera business into a whole new division all by itself. This new division is set to be called Samsung Digital Imaging and it will be the source of all Samsung camera-based products beginning on February 1st.
Also on this date, Samsung Digital Imaging will begin to be listed on its own as a separate entity. This will be done in an effort to separate this from the Samsung Group’s heavy industry segment. This also makes it easier for the new management to more thoroughly focus on the consumer digital camera industry.
This split would make perfect sense. Especially, when you consider what Samsung Techwin is known for making besides digital cameras, which includes gas turbine engines, mobile artillery and more.

Next time your “friend” hands you a pack of gum, beware. It could be Swann’s MovieStick in disguise, recording your every move. Small enough to actually fit in a gum wrapper, this industrial espionage device (read: portable digicam) can store up to 2.5 hours of video on a 2GB MicroSD card (not included). You can recharge the battery with any USB connection and while there’s no news on availability the retail tag has been set at $120. Imagine how many packs of real gum you can buy with that money. Many of us miss Polaroids. They weren’t all that great, but they did provide a strange sort of instant gratification. Sadly, Polaroid is dead. But it keeps coming back in other forms. You might remember Zink, that company whose technology prints digital photos on the spot without ink.
Well, they’re back, this time with strange bedfellows. They’ve been rolling around in the sheets with toy-maker Tomy to make the xiao TIP-521, a digital camera with a printer built in. The xiao has a five megapixel resolution, so you may want to wait a bit. The point is they are on it people. Polaroid lives on.
