Sony announces 12.25 MP image sensor for camera phones, available starting March 2009

Samsung may have mumbled something about its 12 MP camera phones, but it’s Sony the company that actually announced the world’s first 12 MP CMOS image sensor for handsets.

The Asian half of the Sony Ericsson joint-venture has just gone official with IMX060PQ, a 1/2.5 CMOS image sensor from the Exmor series that, apparently, has the industry’s highest Megapixel count: 12.25 MP.

The new 12.25 MP sensor is equipped with autofocus and it will be available staring March 2009. Its price is said to be of 2,500 Japanese yen ($26), so the phones to include it should not be more expensive than the 8 Megapixel ones that are already on the market (like Sony Ericsson C905, Samsung Innov8 or LG Renoir).

Needless to say, the handsets that will include Sony’s IMX060PQ will be made by Sony Ericsson, so I guess we should expect some really hot Cyber-shot phones to come in 2009. After all, Ericsson mentioned something about super camera phones too.

Sony has also announced the upcoming release of the following image sensors:

Sony says that, although they are extremely small, the new image sensors can deliver high-quality images. That’s thanks to several factors, including: a unique pixel structure, the implementation of a Cu process for fine interconnections, and Sony’s proprietary “Column-Parallel A/D Conversion technique”.

Let’s hope Sony knows what it’s doing and the higher Megapixel count will indeed make mobile photos look better than ever.

The first 9 Megapixel autofocus camera module for handsets announced

It seems that 8 MP camera phones should already step aside to make room for the 9 MP handsets, although the first ones haven’t had the chance to conquer the market yet.

Digital Imaging Systems, a German-American developer of camera module technology, announced the availability of DIS6931 – the first ever 9 Megapixel camera module created for mobile devices.

Basically, a handset equipped with this camera module will be able to take photos at a 3488 x 2616 pixels maximum resolution. Even more, since the module features uber-fast autofocus (less than 300 milliseconds), a fast click-to-capture time (less than 200 ms) and high-quality lenses, the phone to integrate it should be among the best when it comes to photo quality.

The DIS6931 also comes with a mechanical shutter, ND filter (neutral density filter) and support for lots of viewfinder / HDTV sizes (up to 30fps frame rates).

Pre-production samples of DIS6931 are available right away, while commercial units should start shipping at the end of 2008, which might mean that the first quarter of 2009 could bring us one or even more 9 MP camera phones.

I wonder which handset manufacturer will be the first to incorporate the DIS6931 module into one of its devices. Maybe Nokia, since the Finns don’t have an 8 MP camera phone yet, like most of the other giant producers do. Well, what do you think?

Samsung claims world’s slimmest 8MP cellphone module

Samsung 8MP CMOS camera module claims to be world’s slimmestIf you like one of those who frequently use your mobile phone for taking photos, things just got a little clearer. Samsung recently unveiled what they claim is the world’s thinnest 8MP CMOS designed for use with cellphones.

The device measures just 28mm × 15.3mm × 8.5mm, and the small size is not all. Like many digital cameras, the little photo-taking module features face-detection, anti-shake, ISO 1600 sensitivity and can even detect and automatically snap a photo when it recognizes a smile.

Fortunately this isn’t just some hyped technology that Samsung is flaunting for years down the road. The company says the new slim 8MP CMOS should be available for mobile phones yet in the 3rd or 4th quarter of this year.
