Putting your devices in standby mode still makes your electric bill unpleasent to look at. It’s not good for your blood pressure and it doesn’t do the environment any good either. Bye Bye Standby wants to help you with that. It features a motion sensor inside that enables you to turn devices off when you walk out of the room.
Use the included key fob to completely turn appliances off within a 30 meter radius. The video is of one of our other staffers getting his hands on the device, but I also got some hands on time, and I have to say, that for an open source phone, it’s not too bad. It is a little sluggish, and the menu’s can be confusing since they are all picture based and the pictures don’t make much sense, but other than that, I like it.
It has a 266MHz processor, up from the 200 of the Neo 1973, and the new processor is of the SOC or system on a chip variation and is from Samsung. There still isn’t any 3G access, and it only has tri-band GSM, so international calling might work, but then again, it might not, depending on where you are.
It does however have Bluetooth 2.0, AGPS or assisted GPS, a microSD card slot, WiFi, 3D graphics, 2.8-inch VGA touch screen, and that’s pretty much it other than the fact that its all open and runs Linux. Another fun little tidbit though, is that it meets the bottom end, barebones requirements for running Android, in fact, with all the other hardware in the device, including the 3D graphics, if they would just up the processor speed, this would be a badass Android phone, but where it is now, I think it would have to run some sort of stripped down subset of Android just so you could still do stuff on it.

The lovely crew at Dell invited us to come down to Armani Casa in NYC and enjoy a glass of champagne while we fondled the company’s new iMac competitor, the XPS One. Unfortunately, Armani Casa specializes in the kind of low, moody lighting that entices you to buy a $10,000 sofa, not snap photos of a new computer — but far be it from us to tell them how to light their store. Despite the challenges of exposures and ISOs, you can still sit back and attempt to enjoy these grainy, lowly-lit photos — just don’t blame us if your eyes start to hurt.

So just what is a Chumby? Well, it’s a Chumby, of course: a plush ball with a touchscreen, WiFi, accelerometer, squeeze sensor, and USB ports. Any attempt to shoehorn this device into an existing category of consumer electronics will be met with at least some amount of resistance. The basic idea is to combine some of the best ideas in glanceable information and entertainment — an alarm clock, digital picture frame, bite-sized web clippings, and an iPod dock, for example — with an utterly unique design (when’s the last time you wanted to hug your alarm clock?) and an open, hackable architecture. Like other projects of recent memory, the success of the Chumby will depend as much on the participation of the user community in creating, rating, and discussing widgets as it will depend on Chumby Industries’ own efforts — not to downplay the importance of the hardware, naturally. In the midst of all this Gphone hysteria, we won’t fault you for forgetting about a Nokia candybar first noticed way back in May, but pictured above is the first (confirmed, at least) in the wild shot of the firm’s 5MP-packin’ N82. You heard right — this handset sports a five-megapixel camera (complete with Carl Zeiss lens and a Xenon flash), WiFi, Bluetooth, integrated GPS, 3G connectivity, Nokia Music Store access and automatic screen rotation.
