Re-confirmed: Microsoft, Adobe working to bring Flash to Windows Phone 7 Series

When Microsoft announced Windows Phone 7 Series, the company said that the new OS would not support Flash 10.1 at launch.

However, Adobe recently mentioned that Flash support will eventually come to WP7, and now Mike Chambers (Senior Product Manager for Developer Relations at Adobe) has reconfirmed this. According to him, Adobe and Microsoft are “working closely together” to bring to Flash Player 10.1 to Internet Explorer Mobile on Windows Phone 7 Series devices.

Unfortunately, there’s no mention on when exactly Windows Phone 7 will get Flash support.

Of course, we first have to wait for Microsoft to actually launch WP 7 – the first devices are expected to be available in late 2010 (and the LG Panther is probably one of them).

Windows Mobile 6.5 not good enough for Adobe Flash 10.1, but some WM 6.5 phones might be updated to WP7

Adobe has decided not to provide Flash 10.1 support for Windows Mobile 6.5, because the OS “does not support some of the critical APIs” needed.

However, Adobe says it will wait until Windows Phone 7 Series is launched and then provide Flash support for Microsoft’s OS.

Interestingly, Adobe mentions that the first Windows Mobile phone to get Flash support is the HTC HD2 – which can only mean the smartphone will be, at some point, upgraded to Windows Phone 7, as rumored more than once until now. You can read more at the Adobe Forums here.

As further evidence for HD2’s possible upgrade, Microsoft says in a tweet that WM 6.5 to WP7 upgrades are “really for the hardware partners to think about.” Which means Microsoft has nothing against upgrading Windows Mobile 6.5 phones to Windows Phone 7, as long as we’re talking about devices that meet the WP7 minimum specs requirements.

As for Android, the first smartphones to get Flash support (in mid 2010) are the Motorola Droid / Milestone and the Google Nexus One. All Android smartphones that meet Adobe’s software and hardware requirements will be supported (they probably need to run Android 2.1 or a newer version).

Google Nexus One Demonstrated with Flash 10.1 Support

For those Nexus One users who eagerly waiting for the Flash 10.1 support, SlashGear has spotted a Nexus One demo unit running with Flash 10.1 support at the Mobile World Congress event. The Flash 10.1 plugin for the Android web browser is not fully completed though. It is now done without a proper hardware acceleration support. SlashGear was told that, “you won’t get the same frame-rates and you don’t get the power saving.” due to the lack of hardware acceleration.

With the Flash support you can play flash video, flash games directly with your Android web browser. The video playback in the demonstration unit is certainly not smooth, but at least you see a working unit in progress. Check out the demonstration below:

Adobe says 7m requests came from iPhone and iPod touch users for Flash

adobe-warning

Apple may downplay Flash by not supporting it but Adobe claims iPhone and iPod touch users think otherwise. According to their in-house data and visits to Adobe.com, more than 7m attempts to download flash were initiated by iPhone / iPod touch users in December alone. This number is more than double than what Adobe experienced during June 2009.

It will be interesting to see if Apple succumbs to consumer demand or continues to turn it down citing security reasons.

Strategy Analytics predicts Flash will be found in more than 250m devices by 2012.

Adobe suggests workaround to bring Flash to iPad (iPhone & iPod touch)

Adobe flash

Apple’s iPhone, iPod touch and even the recently announced iPad excel as far as web surfing is concerned but it’s an indigestible fact that all these revolutionary devices do not have Adobe Flash support. Now with the launch of iPad, Adobe has responded to bring Flash support albeit by way of apps only.

Flash developers can use Flash technology to create iPhone, iPad apps using the Flash Pro CS5. As said before, this will allow devs to make Flash apps and games but playing flash content on a website still rests on Apple to enable flash support.

There is no word when Flash Pro CS5 will be available to all developers but Adobe is taking requests from devs to enroll them in the pre-release.
