Secondly, Google entered into the mobile phone OS and platform development arena with Android. While not quite proven as of yet, Google is a force to be reckon with in the handset world. Even if Google stays with software development, the mere presence of Android means developers will be interested in writing applications on top of Android as well as leveraging Google web services APIs in their applications.
Thus in order to stay on par with the competition, Nokia needs to make sure application developers stay interested in Nokia products. Yet - who will want to write applications that only run on Nokia devices? That’s where the purchase of Trolltech makes business sense. Think about it for a second. A developer writes an application using Trolltech frameworks which are now usable on Nokia products AND across multiple other platforms including Windows and Linux AND the Mac - of course some a recompilation is necessary but that’s relatively minor!
Compare that to developing an application for Android or the iPhone. Write an app for those OS’s and you won’t be able to easily recompile the app for another platform - UNLESS of course, Trolltech’s frameworks also get ported to the iPhone and Android.
It’ll be interesting to see what fruit this purchase will bear for Nokia over the next year or so.

Let’s face it, Guitar Hero is not nearly enough for some would be Rock stars out there. To them, everything needs to have the ability to be plucked, strummed and otherwise abused musically. And the air guitar only gets you so far before people start avoiding you like the plague. This is for those people.
The PocketGuitar is a virtual guitar for the iPhone and iPod Touch. It was developed as a Google Code project by Shinya Kasatani. You can also use the songs on your iPod for those long guitar sessions. Apparently, it’s very easy to install. Now you’ll have a whole new way to annoy those around you, while getting your guitar action on.
You can thank me later, after your hand cramps up. Surely this is the Golden Age of man or something, when you can play a phone like a guitar and it’s considered not all that unusual.

In fact, even bigger than this phone is the stack its running known as CLP or the Convergent Linux Platform. The company backing this stack says that with this stack the time required to bring an Android device to market could be halved.

Android, as it is right now, is kind of like Java, you or the company you buy your device from, has to provide all the back-end stuff and Android runs on top of that, allowing it to be multi-platform, well, the way I read it, CLP is kind of a middle man that would make the backend part a lot easier to come up with. I could be reading this wrong though.
Regardless, the company is reporting that they already have a device, a Qtek 9090 to be precise, running the suggested CLP/Android combo with several GUI tweaks, messaging software, push email, VoIP, OTA firmware updates, Java, and Adobe Flash. Thatâs pretty impressive in and of itself and makes me really want an Android phone even more, apparently thatâs all thanks to a âHardware Mobility Engineâ which they describe as being a BIOS for your mobile phone.

Kingston was showing off 4 new flash drives, the one I was most impressed with is the HyperX one. I mean, their HyperX PC memory is impressive so I can only expect similar speeds from this flash drive, and it delivers with a write speed of 20MB/second and read speed thatâs 10MB/second faster, this thing is built for ReadyBoost. You can get these drives for 74, 131, and 266 dollars in capacities of 2, 4, and 8 gigabytes respectively.

Then there was the DataTraveler Style which comes with one sheet of custom punch outs that you can insert into a slot in the drive to give it that little bit of unique style, and they also have a special site where you can make your own and print them out if you donât like the designs that come bundled. This model comes in 1, 2, 4, and 8 gigabyte capacities for $16, $27, $54, and $110 respectively.
There are two more, the DataTraveler 110 and the 400, the 110 is boring, its new, but its just a plain old flash drive thatâs available in 4 colors corresponding to their capacity which goes up to 8GB. The 400 on the other hand has the MigoSync software built in which will allow you to sync a bunch of files from your home PC and more or less completely recreates that environment on any other Windows PC all from the flash drive. The DT 400 is available in 2, 4, and 8 gigabytes and can be had for $31, $56, and $137.

With over 700,000 of these babies sold its no surprise they are trying something new to see how much longer they can capitalize on this single design, and they really are truly amazing devices. Other than the external color change there is at least one internal update as well.

The internal update comes in the form of some better QWERTY keyboard software, I wonder if that brings it closer to that of the iPhone, or if maybe itâs even better than that. This is one shiny phone, I feel sorry for the photographer that had to try and take shots of the thing without getting a ton of glare.

Since you were probably wondering, it appears to only be coming to 18 European countries, no word on if/when it will make its way to the US. Pricing though should be pretty close to the $500 USD that the older models seem to be going for these days.

The NoahPad UMPC was something I reported on before I even got to CES, but they company that makes it had it here and they gave a little demo. The keyboard is at best weird, it acts as both the keyboard and the mouse and switches between the two via a toggle switch.

You can in fact hang it from a hanger, it will stand on its own as a picture frame, and you can even bend the screen back and down and lay it on the dash to use for navigation. Also, as the previous article stated, you can type on it even with the screen folded all the way back around because there is a keyboard overlay that pops up to show you which key you are touching.
They have the units made, at least two of them, and they have plans for several new attachments and software updates. I have no clue on price or availability as the representatives only barely spoke English, but as soon as I hear something, Iâll let you know.

I almost completely missed this nifty little musical gadget, it was tucked away in a seemingly hidden corner at a show I went to, but luckily I stumbled upon it. It is a drum pad and synthesizer combined.

It requires a computer and a separate pair of speakers, but the drum pad has 127 concentric circles possible on it and it can not only detect where you hit the pad, but how hard and it plays the noise in respect to how hard and where you hit. So, lets say you set it up for a 7-piece drum set, the inner most circle will be the bass, then snare, then toms, cymbals, etc. as you work your way out.

Using the software thatâs required on the computer you can set the drum pad up to work with various percussion instruments or any other sound you program it for ranging from one sound for the whole pad all the way up to 127 sounds if you think you are good enough to be able to hit exactly where it is. It is played just like an electronic drum with real drum sticks, and if you want one, its $349 and I am pretty sure they said it comes with the software with has a fairly large library of sounds already built in, but you can add your own too.
