Ferrari Badges Motorola Z8

motorola ferrari phones.jpg

Ferrari would badge your cat’s arse these days if you paid it enough. Motorola obviously has since there’s a new Ferrari-themed phone on the loose.

This is the Motorola Z8 Ferrari Limited Edition and yes, it opens up into that curvy banana shape. The specs are the same as the non-stamped Z8 [2MP camera with 8x zoom, VGA camera for video calling, music player, messaging, email, bluetooth, pretty display with 30fps playback etc.] which has been around for almost a year. This time around it has some horses on it. In addition, you will also get:

2 Ferrari videos
Pre-registration to the official Ferrari site
Ferrari wallpapers/ ringtones
A bundled copy of the ‘The Bourne Identity’ movie

It’s not official so there’s no pricing and it will not be here for Christmas. It’s due in Q1 2008.

UK Motorists On The Phone Face Jail

As if having a gazillion speed cameras wasn’t enough, UK motorists caught jabbering away on the mobile phone – or smoking at the wheel – could be locked up for as long as two years according to new guidelines drawn up by the Crown Prosecution Service.

mobile phone driver.jpg
The new policy on bad driving has been set up to address not just what constitutes careless driving but also to outline a clear set of charges so that bereaved families have a better shot at justice against drivers that cause death on the roads.

It is likely that the charge of manslaughter will be used more often. Here’s an example of what will constitute various types of bad driving.

Dangerous driving could include:

* racing or competitive driving;
* disregarding warnings from fellow passengers;
* reading a newspaper/map;
* aggressive driving, such as sudden lane changes, cutting into a line of vehicles, or driving much too close to the vehicle in front;

Careless driving could include:

* driving inappropriately close to another vehicle;
* tuning a car radio;
* selecting and lighting a cigarette or similar where the driver was avoidably distracted by that use.

Inconsiderate driving could include:

* flashing of lights to force other drivers in front to give way;
* unnecessarily remaining in an overtaking lane;
* driving with un-dipped headlights which dazzle oncoming drivers;
* driving through a puddle causing pedestrians to be splashed;
* driving a bus in such a way as to alarm passengers.

Driving through a puddle? C’mon.-Martin Lynch

Toshiba Super-Charging Hybrid Cars

tosh barrtery.jpg The problem with many hybrid cars is that the batteries used are just too damn big and slow to recharge to make them a viable purchase for a wider audience. Let’s not even talk about the cost.

Toshiba has just unveiled a battery though that might change all of that. The Super Charge ion Battery (SCiB) is based on lithium-ion technology but is a third of the size and weight of the batteries currently used in hybrid cars and, if that’s not enough, it can be recharged to 90% capacity in under 5 minutes. Now that’s impressive.

Toshiba says the batteries will also last for 10 years. The company is planning mass production of the new batteries next March and, while hybrid cars are the first target market, the company held out hope that this technology will make it into consumer products at a later date.

Just think, a laptop, a phone and all of your other gadgets charged in less than 5 minutes. We can but dream.-Martin Lynch

Batmobile Auction Sucks As Much As The Movie. Almost

1995 batmobile.jpg

The auction of the Batmobile from the 1995 movie excrement known as Batman Forever, spectacularly failed to impress bidders at a recent auction.

Like the movie, it had high expectations with a reserve of $600,000-$800,000 but, in the end, crashed and burned by selling for just $297,000. That’s just over 10% of what it cost to build in the first place. Here’s what the auction site said:

“The Batmobile presented here is a running and driving example constructed in Australia with a fiberglass body and a custom tubular chassis. Its mold cost a reported $2,500,000 and an additional $300,000 was invested to complete the vehicle. As a promotional vehicle, not used in filming, it embarked on various promotional tours around the world before its eventual acquisition by Mr. Wiseman in 1999. It remains fully intact and functional with no damage to speak of. Despite a certain degree of surface texture and minor paint cracking and scuffs, the car remains in very presentable condition. The interior has held up nicely and is entirely custom made, while the undercarriage has been detailed to the standards required for cinema productions. Bat-gadgets such as the rear jet flame are completely functional.”

Sold through RM Auctions the Batmobile was expected to draw big publicity and bucks so what happened? It’s all in the fine print. A quick look reveals an insane list of conditions attached to the sale by movie studio, Warner Brothers. These included one that said the owner, now down almost $300,000, cannot drive the Batmobile in public. Ever.

You can read the rest of the conditions after the jump.-Martin Lynch

Get A Tour Guide For Your Sat-Nav

stonehenge.jpg

Considering that 1 in 10 18-24-year olds think that the A1 was built by the Romans, maybe they need some cultural help in a format they can understand.

British inventor and history buff, Daniel Taylor, has created the RoadTour tour guide software for use with Garmin Sat-Nav systems. The software – described jokingly as “1066 And All That-Nav” - is triggered by satellite prompts at certain locations, providing short audio commentary and photos of 600 key historical attractions, like castles, stately homes and battlefields. Taylor explains:

“Restoring our knowledge and understanding of the history of this amazing country is what this product is about,” said Daniel, managing director of RoadTour. “A friendly reminder, which tempts us into exploring our heritage as we’re driving up the M40 or wherever, seems to me to be altogether a good thing.”

“It struck me that it would be great to have an audio guide in the car, alerting you to all the historical sites in the area. At the time the technology wasn’t really there, so I chewed on it for a few years and honed the concept. It’s only during the last year that the devices have become powerful enough to make it happen.”

“We hope our guide will tempt people to pull off the motorway or A-road and visit some of the wonderful sites which have helped shape Britain’s history. But even if they don’t, their journeys will be enlivened and filled with interesting stories and snippets about the country through which they’re travelling.”

I think it’s a great idea and at £20, it could make a nice little stocking filler for someone. Especially the 38% of people surveyed by YouGov who think Hadrian’s Wall is in Scotland.-Martin Lynch

Make Your Own BioFuel With FuelPod2

fuelpod.jpg With celebrities driving hybrids and the anti-car lobby growing in strength every day, it may be time to look into this alternative fuel malarkey.

If you already have a diesel car, you could do worse than making your own biofuel in the garage using the FuelPod2. The FuelPod2 stands 140cm tall and 60cm wide, and boasts the ability to make up to 50 litres of biodiesel a day from waste cooking oil. Of course, no matter how many deep fried chips you eat, you’ll never have enough waste oil for the FuelPod2 so, you might want to check with your local restaurant or kebab shop before spending £2,056.

Still, the result is a much cheaper fuel you can use instead diesel, which won’t ruin your engine and places you on the frontline in the fight against global warming. If you’d like a quick promotion to Green Captain, then dump the car and opt for the Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bike.-Martin Lynch

Rocker Kart Lets You Rock All the Way to the Shops

The Rocker Kart is a bicycle alternative, retailing at £149.99, the three-wheeled kart lacks any form of visible steering, but that is where the Rocker gets interesting. Apparently, by leaning left or right a patented control mechanism comes into play, altering your course to follow the direction of your weight shift.

That sounds like a recipe for disaster to us, but as we all know such disaster can be equivalent to great fun, and so we want to try this baby out. The build of the device seems to be impressively well done, from the galvanized metal frame to the shapely front wheel, intended for better cornering and, of course, the bad ass flame design adorning the seat and frame. I see a Gizmodo Rocker Kart tournament on the horizon…I see Malik winning a Gizmodo Rocker Kart tournament trophy. I see dead people. -Haroon Malik
