Is a TV too thin when you can cut yourself on it? We’re not quite at that stage yet, but Pioneer are getting there with their Project KURO plasma TV: at just 9mm deep it’s the thinnest yet. They’ve also managed to achieve ‘extreme contrast’ - i.e. black sections of the screen emit no light whatsoever - and all in something a whopping 50-inches across.

Sadly it’s just a concept designed to prove to competitors that Pioneer really is the daddy when it comes to making plasma sets; it won’t be on sale any time soon, but will preview “future concepts” of display technology. Project KURO weighs just 18.6kg.

Pioneer just announced their SyncTV on-line television download service. The ad-supported, subscription-based service costs between $2 to $4 per channel per month or $2 for any show you wish to download outside of your subscription — there’s no mention of streaming capability (though it’s not excluded, either). While details are soft, downloaded video is said to offer DVD-like, “home-theater quality” with surround-sound capabilities and in some cases, hi-def resolution. They will be PC and Mac compatible wrapped in a Sony, Philips, Samsung, and Panasonic (note: not Microsoft or Apple) supported “Marlin” DRM wrapper. As such, expect to see portable players, television, and set top boxes from at least one of these manufactures sometime early next year in support of the nascent service. A private test begins today with a public beta set to launch in January. Unfortunately, the channels and shows available over SyncTV were not revealed today so we’ll just have to wait to see how this develops.

Apparently this rig was at CEATEC and we missed it, but Pioneer is showing off a triple-screened 3D gesture controller for cars at the Tokyo Motor Show, and it looks pretty amazing. The left screen shows GPS, while the far right screen shows potential overlays — selecting an icon from the right screen allows you to “grab” it from the middle holographic section and put it on the left GPS screen. It sounds crazy and potentially distracting, but it’s got that KITT vibe we love so much, and it’s interesting to see gesture and 3D come together like this. Check the read link for lots more pics of this thing in action.

Joining all those other guys who have unveiled new earbuds recently is Pioneer, which has introduced two new sets that actually rely on different nozzles to adjust the sound. Granted, you could just use that built-in equalizer on your DAP to accomplish the same goal, but nevertheless, the SE-CLX9 and SE-CLX7 — which look to differ only in the material they’re constructed from — both come bundled with five different tips that can be used for different genres of music. According to Pioneer, you’ll find attachments (shown after the break) for High Tune 1, High Tune2, Standard, Bass Tune 1 and Bass Tune 2, and each pair also arrives with an extension cable and a carrying case. The duo is set to land next month, and while the aluminum-clad SE-CLX9 will cost ¥22,000 ($190), the less snazzy SE-CLX7 will demand just ¥12,500 ($108).

Pioneer’s been known to unveil new navigators fairly frequently, but the firm is starting October off right by introducing no fewer than nine new units for you to choose from. Starting at the top, the AVIC-HRZ009G / AVIC-HRV002G both sport seven-inch displays, DVD playback, support for MP3 / AAC / DivX formats, a terrestrial digital TV tuner, built-in hard drive and a wireless remote, with the only real difference being the in-dash design of the former and the on-dash (mountable) design of the latter. As your budget tightens, Pioneer ratchets the specs down on seven other similar siblings, giving users a ¥126,000 ($1,094) to ¥262,500 ($2,278) window of alternatives. Hit the read link for all the juicy details on each.
