Sony announces DSC-G3 digicam with Wi-Fi

sony-g3

Oh heck! This camera has Wi-Fi. It even has a browser built-in. Sony DSC-G3 is the world’s first digital camera to pull such a feat – integrate Wi-Fi for easy uploading and sharing of pictures and videos. To promote the feature, Sony is also giving complimentary AT&T Wi-Fi access to Sony’s Easy Upload Home Page until Jan. 31, 2012. Uploading the content is really simple. A user just needs to on the Wi-Fi button and he’s taken to Sony’s upload page where he can select the site he wants to upload. Another good thing is that G3 is DLNA compatible which means hooking it up with another DLNA compatible device is easy.

Moving to its core features, it is a 10.1-megapixel camera and 4X optical zoom Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens. The rear space is taken by a 3.5-inch wide touchscreen Xtra Fine LCD and has a 4GB internal memory to store all the images and videos. External memory is only possible via Memory Stick cards (M2).

The camera has other features to boast, like the intelligent scene recognition system, face detection, smile shutter, image stabilizer and dynamic range optimizer. Sony’s revolutionary camera will sell in Black hue for $500.

TI’s BeagleBoard and DLP Pico Projector == Linux everywhere

Pico Projector and BeagleBoard

TI’s BeagleBoard is a great little Linux system. It consumes less than 2 watts and can connect to all sorts of things; it has an HDMI port that carries DVI-D video, a USB port that lets you connect USB peripherals such as keyboards, mice, and network adapters, an RS-232 serial port, and an expansion connector that includes I2C, GPIO, and more. (The autoconfiguring USB port can also act as a USB gadget, allowing the BeagleBoard to appear as a peripheral when you plug it into a computer).

What’s more, the software (operating system and build tools) is open source, and TI makes the schematics and board layouts available as well. See the Embedded Linux Wiki BeagleBoard page for links to the schematics, board layouts, and information on using the design in your own creations.

TI sent MAKE a BeagleBoard and their latest BeagleBoard accessory, the DLP Pico Projector Development Kit. This is a version of their DLP Pico Projector that’s designed for use with the BeagleBoard. Combine the two, and you’ve got a really small Linux-powered system that can go anywhere you can provide power.

The $149 BeagleBoard has been available for some time from Digi-Key. You can order a Pico Projector Development Kit from Digi-Key for $349. (The Pico Projector should begin shipping in mid to late January 2009).

I spent a few days poking around with the BeagleBoard and the Pico Projector, and it’s a very cool system with immense hackability. If you get your hands on a BeagleBoard, the place to start is the BeagleBoard beginner’s page at the Embedded Linux Wiki. There, you can figure out which cables and accessories you need, how to boot a Linux image on the BeagleBoard, and where to go next.

To use the DLP Pico Projector Development Kit with the BeagleBoard, check out this tip from Koen, which explains which kernel to use and how to configure the BeagleBoard’s bootloader to start up with the correct resolution required by the Pico projector.

Here’s a picture of the BeagleBoard’s first boot screen projected in a semi-dark room on the DLP Pico Projector (note that upon your first boot after following the Embedded Linux Wiki instructions, it may take a while for this screen to appear, as the Linux distribution needs to configure many of the packages):

BeagleBoard first boot.jpg

At the time I tested out the BeagleBoard, I couldn’t find a kernel image that would support both DVI video output and the USB Ethernet adapter I was using (the 3-port USB Hub with 10/100 Ethernet from the BeagleBoard shopping list). But then again, I have always had bad luck with USB Ethernet adapters. So, I just used a USB EV-DO card to get online (I’ll save that for a future HOWTO on the Make blog).

Here’s a photo of the Make blog displayed using the Pico Projector:

Make Blog on the DLP Pico Projector

And to compare, here’s what it looked like when I opened the shades:

Make Blog on the DLP Pico Projector in light

So for $500, you get a powerful Linux-based computer and a tiny projector. I’m looking forward to seeing what people make with these two gadgets.

AMD gets competitive again with the introduction of the Phenom II X4 processors

PPT_PHEIIX4_chip_PINS Wanted to drop a quick note before I head out for day 1 of CES 2009. AMD announced their next generation quad core processor today – the AMD Phenom II – built on the same 45nm process that Intel has been on for a few years now. The Phenom II will initially be available in two versions – the X4 920 and the X4 940 Black Edition - and will fit in nicely between Intel’s Core 2 Quad processor models and the new Core i7 product offerings. The Black Edition processors will have their core clock multiplier unlocked which will be a boon for computing enthusiasts.

The key driving points with the Phenom II?

Where Phenom II will truly compete is in the area of price. The 3GHz Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition will have a price of $275. The Phenom II X4 920 at 2.8GHz will be available for $235. This translates to inexpensive quad core systems with comparable performance to more expensive Core 2 Quad systems and low end Core i7 systems.

With that said, here’s a rundown of early reviews and their verdicts:

ExtremeTech reviews the Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition and has this to say:

“If you’re looking to build a fairly cost effective quad core system, AMD’s latest Phenom II will get you there. Just don’t expect performance miracles.“

The TechReport reviews the new Phenom II’s and has this to say:

“In the Phenom II, AMD has produced a chip that comes strikingly close to duplicating the performance of Intel’s mid-range Core 2 Quad processors, the Q9300 and Q9400”

Bit-Tech reviews both the AMD Phenom II X4 940 and 920 processors and says:

“While not the best performer we’ve ever seen, AMD has finally got a solid competitor it can sell on an inexpensive platform - this should readdress the balance quite nicely in the market.”

TweakTown looks at the Phenom II and the new Dragon platform and says:

“While not quite up to the task of taking on the Core 2 Extreme in raw performance, its associated price tag makes it a fairly attractive option for the performance it offers”

Tom’s Hardware looks at the Phenom II X4 processor and says this:

“When it comes to system efficiency and energy consumption, if you put a Phenom II X4 940 system head-to-head against a Core 2 Quad Q6600, an AMD system delivers measurably better “performance per watt” figures.”

Anandtech takes a look at both the Phenom II X4 940 and 920 here with this to say:

“If you’ve been waiting for an AMD to be excited about for the past couple of years, today is your day. Competition is back.”

Bjorn3D looks at the Phenom II X4 940 and the verdict is…

“Even though we are positive about the Dragon platform we cannot stop to be a bit disappointed again that AMD cannot put out something that rivals the best from Intel.”

LegitReviews looks at the AMD Phenom II X4 940 processor and has this to say:

“The AMD Phenom II processor series processor may not be the performance winner in all the benchmarks, but it might not need to be competitive in this day and age when the price tag matters most.”

OverclockersClub looks at the higher end 940 processor with this to say at the end:

“For the price, the Phenom II is a killer processor.”

Samsung P3 PMP offers true haptic feedback

samsung-p3

Samsung’s latest entrant in the world of PMPs is P3. It features a 3-inch WQVGA display with an aspect ratio of 16:9, which somehow wants to compete with Apple’s iPod Touch. Comparisons aside, the 0.39-inch svelte player will come in storage sizes varying from 4GB to 32GB and plays all the popular video, audio and image formats. The USP of the player is its EmoTure touch interface that promises to give true haptic feedback. Every swipe or touch on the screen will activate a variety of physical sensations for more intuitive user experience.

Spicing things further, Samsung has included its proprietary audio enhancement DNSe 3.0 and Bluetooth to hook it up with the phone to answer calls from the player’s built-in microphone. Expect the player to ship by the first half of this year.
