Sony Ericsson T303 Daisy Edition hits the UK

When first announced by Sony Ericsson, sometime back in March 2008, Sony Ericsson T303 didn’t make too much waves, except maybe with its small dimensions and its lightweight case (only 93 grams).

The T303 is just an entry-level slider, so in order to make customers really interested, Sony Ericsson has now launched a Daisy Edition of it.

Obviously called Sony Ericsson T303 Daisy Edition, the handset features some cool daisies on the back case and is available via T-Mobile UK.

If you like it, you can buy it right away from here, for only £49.99 (€65 or $75 ) on Pay As You Go – thus without a contract agreement.

Note, however, that feature-wise you’ll only get tri-band GSM/GPRS connectivity, a 1.8 inch, 128 x 160 pixels TFT display, a 1.3MP camera, FM radio, Bluetooth and 8MB of non-expandable memory.

Anyway, with this pretty back case, the Sony Ericsson T303 Daisy Edition might be a good Christmas gift for those who like simple but good-looking phones.

Solar-powered iCharge eco to let you charge your phone in the wild

Have you ever wondered how all those unofficial handsets keep getting leaked in photos that were taken “in the wild?” Let me tell you.

First, a sneaky factory worker or someone who “gets around” will manage to acquire a prototype of a particular device, like say, the Motorola Atila, and will sneak it out into the streets for its photo-taking session.

Then, once the top-secret handset is out, there’s only one more thing to take care of. And that’s the battery, both for the unofficial handset in question and the digital camera that’s going to be used in taking photos of it.

Enter the iCharge eco, a new solar-powered 1,350 mAh battery that’s capable of delivering an output of DC5.0-5.5V/600 mA. It’s compatible with a slew of battery-powered mobile devices including the Sony PSP, Apple iPod, Nintendo DS Lite, a bunch of laptops, and mobile phones, of course!

With the iCharge eco, it takes around 3.5 hours to charge via AC Adaptor, 5 hours via USB, and 15 hours via solar panel. Not exactly as energy efficient or convenient as some of you might have expected, especially the 15-hour charging via solar panel part, but hey, at least it’ll make sure the sneaked-out phone is powered on in its leaked photos. Always keep one handy, and send in your tips here in the future!

Nokia on track to closing Symbian deal by year-end

Nokia’s 264 million euro offer to buy Symbian is on track, says chief development officer Mary McDowell, and should be in wrap-up mode by this year’s end.

The offer to acquire the last remaining shares of Symbian that still weren’t theirs was made by Nokia back in June. Since then, a number of other electronic companies have joined the original 10-member org to form the Symbian Foundation.

For Nokia, members of the Symbian Foundation, and the open-source community, this is a great development. Indeed, since Nokia plans to roll out the first devices powered by the Symbian Foundation’s OS as early as 2010, the deal should be settled even more earlier.

McDowell also hints that Nokia may reinforce their suite of Internet services, further commenting, “Clearly Internet services represent a revenue growth opportunity, (but it is) also a basis of competition in high-end devices.”

So, powerful, internet-enabled, and high-end, is probably what we can expect from Nokia and the Symbian Foundation in the future.

Samsung BizBee - a new range of business phones for Europe

Samsung is getting more and more involved into the smartphone market, and a clear proof of this is its newly announced range of business handsets, called Samsung BizBee.

And while it might sound like it should designate a line-up of products for kids, Samsung is targeting the new range at “busy executives, who require a business mobile that offers optimum performance, 24/7, from any location.”

All the devices from the BizBee family will feature: all-in-one connectivity, a full QWERTY keyboard, email and other business capabilities.

The BizBee range will debut with a handset that’s not exactly new: Samsung i780, reviewed by UV months ago. So why did Samsung include it in the new range? Well, because it will come with Windows Mobile 6.1, unlike the current version which runs on the old WM 6.0 platform.

The WM 6.1 Samsung i780 will initially be released in the UK, Spain, Netherlands and the Nordic countries.

Starting late November, Samsung will launch an advertising campaign for its BizBee range. It will include, among others, print ads that showcase:

a lady sitting in a desert location; she is obviously some way from her office, but she is connected to her work via her BizBee handset. The slogan is simple – “This is my office”.

As for the other upcoming smartphones from the BizBee family, Samsung gave no further details. Guess we have to wait and see what they will bring.

My favorites from that list include tgiblackfriday.com, blackfriday.fm, and bfgear.com which includes the scanned images of the deals themselves. Overall, I’m unimpressed with this year’s Black Friday deals but let’s hope consumers shop a lot anyhow – we all know the economy needs a boost!

Sony Ericsson launches new panels for Xperia X1: Facebook and Windows Live

Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 current or future owners should be happy to find out that SE has just released new panels for the unique Windows Mobile 6.1 smartphone.

Two of the panels are created in collaboration with Facebook and Microsoft Windows Live. In consequence, they offer access to said services, for all the users who have a busy social life via their Xperia X1.

The Xperia Facebook panel is designed to offer quick access to an intuitive version of the Facebook site. Some of the panel’s new functions are: a revamped visual representation of friends’ statuses; fast and easy photo upload; and quick access to friends list and phone numbers (click to call capabilities included).

The Xperia Windows Live panel helps users import their existing Windows Live contacts and settings to the smartphone. You can also sync contacts from your phonebook, and access Hotmail or Live Messenger.

In addition to the two panels described above, Sony Ericsson has also presented the Dashwire panel, which is not as new as the other ones. This panel is designed to synchronize Xperia X1’s content with a PC or the Web.

You can download any of the mentioned Xperia panes from here (search in the Panels section), for free.
