mplayit: try free mobile game demos before you buy

How many times have you plunked down your hard earned cash on a new game for your mobile phone, only to find out the game sucked? Now you can try out full (time-limited) versions of many mobile games right in your web browser before you decide to buy.

Mplayit Mobile Phone Free Game Demos

The guys over at mplayit offer you the chance to play a number of Java-based games from the convenience of your computer’s web browser. The site currently offers over 60 fully playable titles including games from EA Mobile, NAMCO, SEGA, Gameloft, Digital Chocolate and other popular mobile game makers. An phone key emulation wrapper lets you use your mouse or key controls to play the games just like they’d work on your phone. To keep up on the latest games, they also offer an RSS feed of the latest game demos as they’re released.

While most games have a time limit of 3 to 5 minutes, it’s definitely enough for you to get a taste for each title, and to make a better informed decision before you load up your cell phone with a bunch of crap. And maybe you’ll discover some gems that you never would have given a second look to.

Sonim XP3 launched in the UK - Vodafone to give it for free before Christmas

Sonim XP3, the successor of XP1, presented as one of the toughest GSM phones in the world, is now available for purchase in the UK.

The handset is being sold unlocked, for £209 (+ VAT). You can find it here, in three color versions: black, grey and yellow.

It’s said that, just before Christmas, Vodafone UK will include the new Sonim XP3 in its line-up, offering it for free to those who get it together with a contract agreement.

So what’s this Sonim XP3 all about? Well, the device comes to redefine the term “rugged phone” and it’s built to endure anything, on any weather.  It is MIL-910F certified, waterproof (IP-57 certification), it has durable mechanics and a shock resistant screen. No wonder it’s being sold with an unconditional 3-year guarantee.

The features of Sonim XP3 are modest when compared to the ones of a regular phone, but pretty good for a rugged handset:

It may not be slim or beautiful (although it does look kind of cool), but if you want a worry-free phone, Sonim XP3 might be a good choice.

Apple sued for iPhone’s web-surfing capabilities

The iPhone’s mobile Safari web browser is the best I’ve ever seen on a handset. When it comes to browsing the Web on the go, nothing beats the iPhone’s double-click or pinch-out to zoom in, pinch-in to zoom out, built-in Google search box and lightning fast rendering. Not to mention the fact that it renders the mobile web in near-exact desktop likeness.

But not everyone is pleased by the performance of mobile Safari. And as a matter of fact, a company called EMG Technology LLC has just filed a lawsuit against Apple for allegedly infringing on patents filed by Los Angeles real estate developer Elliot Gottfurcht and his two co-inventors.

According to the suit, the technology in the iPhone that helps it navigate and display some websites intended for viewing on small phone screens infringes a patent that Gottfurcht and his co-inventors obtained last month. It should be noted however, that HTC, RIM, and practically every mobile phone manufacturer of the last five years at least, have been churning out handsets that are capable of displaying the Web on small screens, but the suit is only gunning against Apple.

Gottfurcht’s lawyer, Stanley Gibson, says they “haven’t looked at anything other than the iPhone.” Which figures, because he further goes on to say: “That was the device that we looked at. Obviously it’s very popular.”

Obviously they might as well be just patent trolling. Which is often the case with high-profile companies that have highly successful products. Anyway, with the iPhone being more than a year old, and the patent that it allegedly infringes only having been granted last month, it would be interesting to see how this all turns out.

Pantech Duo 2 clears FCC

The still unannounced follow-up to the original dual keyboard-packing Pantech Duo has just been approved by the FCC. It came black as can be expected from a Pantech Duo phone, and throws a rather small amount of innovation to the table as far as features are concerned.

For what appears to be a small handset, the Pantech Duo 2 also carries the same alphanumeric keypad and QWERTY keyboard as the original. And then, it will be equipped with Windows Mobile 6.1.

To be officially called the Pantech Duo 2 C820, this handset features the following:

- Dual-band 850/1900 GSM/EDGE/WCDMA
- 2-megapixel camera with video capture
- Bluetooth connectivity
- microSD card slot

As of this time’s writing, this handset’s official release is still unknown. Though if any Pantech Duo 2 user ever brings his device to the US, he won’t be having any problems.

iPod Touch 2G is faster than iPhone

So you thought iPod Touch was just a cellular radio-less version of the iPhone? Well, this may sound true for the first 1st gen iPod Touch, but the case is a bit different with the successor. Handheld Games Corp’s CEO, Thomas Fessler claims that the iPod Touch 2G houses a 532MHz processor as compared to iPhone 3G that has a processor running at a clock speed of 412MHz.

“Our first step to increase fps performance was to introduce hardware dependent levels of detail. Where we can easily display two 1500 polygon tennis players with 32 bones each on the iPod touch 2G and maintain fast and fluid game play, the original iPod touch just chokes, and in some instances so do the iPhones. To speed up the touch, we reduced the players to 800 polygons in farther away moments of gameplay, and are now using 1000 polygon models for close ups, bringing the original iPod touch game play performance level close to that of the iPhone 3G. We’ve taken this approach across the board with great results.”

Handheld Games sells their maiden game, TouchSports Tennis in the App Store for $4.99. The first version is expected to lag in devices except iPod Touch 2G. the company has revealed that their next version is on their way for older versions giving better playback framerate.
