Sony PlayTV digital tuner for PS3 launching September 10th

Sony’s European arm has confirmed that the PlayTV free-to-air digital TV tuner and PVR add-on for the PS3 will launch in the UK on September 10th.  SCEE president David Reeves told Eurogamer that the European launch would run “from September to December” and the PlayTV, in a change to the known specifications, will allow users to record programmes while simultaneously gaming.

The new functionality was actually included in the firmware 2.4 upgrade, Reeves disclosed, meaning users with up-to-date consoles will merely have to plug in the new peripheral in order to begin recording Freeview.

“It was very difficult for some of the tech guys but we had to include it in the firmware upgrade, 2.41, but it’s done now” David Reeves, president, SCEE

Sony previously confirmed the PlayTV would carry a €99 price tag, and this week revealed that countries outside of Europe would be seeing the tuner.  Both Australia and New Zealand will get PlayTV in January or February 2009, with the delay giving the countries an opportunity to settle on digital terrestrial standards.

Wii outsells Xbox 360 in the US

Wii outsells Xbox 360 in the US
Nintendo’s Wii has now surpassed the Xbox 360 as the leading console in U.S. homes among the latest generation of video-game players. As of June, U.S. consumers bought nearly 10.9 million Wii consoles since it’s introduction, which makes Nintendo top console dog. In fact, the Wii has been the top-selling console in all but one month in the U.S. since it launched, according to research firm NPD Group Inc.

Nintendo is projecting that worldwide, the Wii’s annual sales will surpass the number of consoles that Sony sells for the first time this fiscal year. The formula seems pretty straightforward. Get people actually in the game with motion control and Miis, appeal to all ages and keep the price somewhat reasonable.

‘wasp knife’ will stab your victims then freeze their organs

Britain is reportedly on alert for the wasp knife, a knife that can “deliver a ball of compressed gas capable of killing its victim at the press of a button.” A needle in the tip of the knife’s blade shoots out a little frozen gas ball which instantaneously grows to “the size of a basketball” and freezes the victim’s internal organs.

wasp knife

The Wasp Knife was created to kill bears and sharks, which is super handy if you’re like me and you find that bears and sharks are constantly bothering you. Especially bears. Then again, I spend most weekends hiking the back-country of rural Montana while slathered from head to toe in a delicious layer of honey, so maybe it’s related to that.

Guess where the knife is made? The U.S.A., of course. Do we know how to kick ass or what? Just kidding. This is insanely scary. You can read the full article in the UK Daily Mail.

stick your iphone somewhere handy with the soaripod

For all those times you just can’t handle holding your iPhone in your hands, the Soaripod will hold it for you. It’s got a flexible 12-inch extension arm and clamps to any surface.

The company refers to this product as “the natural evolution of a long-necked dinosaur.” I think this is a bad marketing slogan, because by now everyone knows about the ginormous asteroids and we’ve all seen Jurassic Park and it’s just not working for me on any level. But, maybe that’s also partly because the Soaripod looks almost exactly like the evolution of this Gorillapod I got like 3 years ago to hold up my digital camera.

You can buy one here for $29.99. Now for the lame part: they don’t have one that fits your shiny new iPhone 3G yet, only your ancient, crusty, old 1st generation iPhone or iPod Touch (maybe that’s where they got the dinosaur slogan from - Ed.). They fit on other cellphones, video players, and smartphones as well, but exactly which ones aren’t specified.
