When time comes grinding to a halt, and some Cthulhu, alien, or robotic variety of overlords stand in judgment of all that has gone down on planet Earth, we suspect the vibrating Bluetooth bracelet will rank pretty low on their list… just beneath politicians from the early 21st century and cutting someone off on the freeway. At any rate, if you can’t stand walking around in public “hands free” with that pesky Bluetooth headset sticking out of your ear-hole, perhaps this is the device for you. Instead of brazenly assuming you want to be shackled to a phone conversation 24/7, the bracelet subtly buzzes your wrist to let you know that you’ve got an incoming call, text message, or email. A three-hour charge will garner you 100 hours of use, and the bracelet is compatible with Bluetooth 1.1, 1.2, and 2.0 — so if it doesn’t work with your phone, it just wasn’t meant to be. Available right now for the shockingly low price of £23.50 (or about $48).

Just when you thought Chinese PMPs couldn’t get uglier or more useless, along comes a fresh target of scorn: the Shenzhen Sinykon Technology M120. Hey, we know that the colorful buttons are tempting, but just imagine the cruel stares and muffled laughs you’ll be the victim of when you whip this thing out in public. Sure, it’s got a 65,000 color 1.8-inch screen, an FM radio, e-book reader, voice recorder, and can handle your WMV, ASF, AMV, MPX, MPEG, MOV, AVI, MP1, MP2, MP3, WMA, and WAV files — as well as some other, less important image formats — but seriously, that thing is ugly. “They” claim that the player is XP, OS X, and Linux compatible, “we” suggest you proceed with caution. Extreme caution.

This is one of the hardest things I have had to write. Dear friend Marc Orchant passed away today having never recovered from the heart attack he suffered a week ago. Marc has touched me so deeply and will always be in my memory, and I am sure that many, many people feel the same way. Marc’s funeral will likely be held in the middle of this week for those wishing to attend and details will be made available shortly. Another of Marc’s good friends Oliver Starr received the sad news from Marc’s family and has posted the details, and I’ve reproduced them for Marc’s friends to see:
It is with great sadness that I report that
Marc Orchant, Husband to Sue, Father to Rebecca and Jason, and friend
to so many, passed away just a short time ago. I was notified by Marc’s
brother Craig.
His family and closest friends were at his
side and his favorite music was playing. Craig said that Marc’s passing
was as peaceful and easy as anyone could have hoped and he left this
world surrounded by love from so many people that he couldn’t possibly
have failed to know how many people cared for, appreciated and
respected him.
Anyone that knew Marc also knew how much he
loved music; especially the Grateful Dead. The excerpt below is from
one of the songs that helped the family say goodbye to Marc and helped
Marc move on to the next world. I talked to Marc almost every single
day for the past couple of years. I’m sure that I’m not alone when I
say that I am going to miss him so, so much.
To allow for people that may need to travel
and take time of work, services are most likely going to be held this
coming Wednesday afternoon at the Temple where the Orchants are
members. I will provide more specific details as soon as they have been
provided to me. Marc’s family expressed once again their gratitude for
the outpouring of love and support that the technology community has
shown in this very difficult time. Your warmth, concern and friendship
will not be forgotten.
River gonna take me
Sing me sweet and sleepy
Sing me sweet and sleepy
all the way back home
It’s a far gone lullaby
sung many years ago
Mama, Mama, many worlds I’ve come
since I first left home
Goin home, goin home
by the waterside I will rest my bones
Listen to the river sing sweet songs
to rock my soul

Spam Arrest LLC has won the lawsuit filed against them by Hormel, the makers of that spiced pork product that no one you know actually eats. Hormel sued Spam Arrest LLC, makers of the popular Spam Arrest software, in 2002 for trademark infringement claiming that consumers would confuse the two products. However, Spam Arrest won the case. The court found that while Hormel’s trademark was famous, that fame didn’t extend to computer software.
“We are thrilled the court affirmed our right to continue using the SPAM ARREST trademark to identify the best spam elimination software available,” added Brian Cartmell, CEO of Spam Arrest. “Spam Arrest made a decision that we would not be bullied. Consumers are smarter than to confuse us with the source for meat called spam.”
Hormel has sued dozens of other companies, including Earthlink and Postini, also claiming infringement. Perhaps they should sue Monty Python. It was a skit on their “Monty Python’s Flying Circus” show that eventually gave junk mail it’s name.

You heard that right, folks. Supposedly, AIBO is back… with a vengence. According to rumors, the fiesty-but-killed robo-dog from Sony is making a comeback with a new paintjob and whole slew of fresh features. First and foremost, the re-upped model will be tailored to interface wirelessly with your PSP and PS3, will have a built in headcam which utilizes a motion sensor and facial recognition, and can stream its POV video over WiFi to your system. In addition, you’ll apparently get to remotely trigger the bot with your handheld and control its movements, plus you can set it to “guard” your house (though we’re pretty sure most enterprising burglars will just turn the little dude on its side if provoked). Of course, right now this is speculation — Stuff Magazine’s piece on the subject (above) gives the rumored bot a 53-percent chance of becoming a reality — but there certainly seems to be some meat behind these murmurs. C’mon Sony — the pup deserves a second chance.

Although my home office is the last place I’d use a WWAN connection, I’ve been testing the device here on multiple machines. I was concerned on Friday because the USB727 modem in the MacBook Pro was showing something strange: downloads, which are usually faster than uploads were actually slower than uploads. I was seeing a download speed around 500 kbps with the uploads hovering over 600 kbps.
I’ve since retested on the Mac and the above screencap of my results from a few minutes ago are more like it: 1235 kbps down and 604 kbps back up. Whew! For most of the weekend I was concerned because the same modem in my Samsung Q1P tested at the same rough numbers as the test above. Incidentally, my first several speedtests on the Samsung Q1P with Vista kept freezing the machine. Hard. Nothing less than holding the power button would shut the machine. I assumed there was a glitch in the driver install, so I completely removed the VZ Access software and all drivers, rebooted and reinstalled everything. No problems now and I’m looking forward to some speed tests on the run. Additionally, this offers a good backup connection in the event of a power loss or DSL outage at home.

Looking at the recent announcements from Nokia it looks like they are set to take the fight to Apple in 2008 on at least two fronts.
In terms of handsets they have announced an iPhone look-a-like interface, with touch sensitive screens, landscape screens - basically an iPhone with a Nokia brand it seems.
They also seem to be up for a fight in the on line music space with the announcement of a deal with Universal to provide their whole catalog, including U2 and the Rolling Stones, to certain handsets for a whole year - free! Known as “Comes with Music” it should be available from Q3 2008.
Overall the main message regards the new strategy is that everything is going to be focussed on internet based services like games and music downloads, so expect to see “full Internet capability” on all Nokia handsets in the future.

We’ll start by recommending a little dose of salt before taking this one in, but nevertheless, an interesting photo coupled with a “prototype hands-on report” has got us wondering if Garmin doesn’t have a new GPS unit somewhere close to release. Apparently, the device you see above (labeled Colorado 300) relies primarily on the circular scroll wheel for navigating menus, and if we had to guess, it’ll likely be marketed towards marine / outdoors customers. Aside from that, all we’re told is that it should land sometime this Spring for around $500, but we’re not holding our collective breath just yet.
