Which is more secure? Internet Explorer or Firefox?

Microsoft Logo

According to Microsoft’s Trustworthy Computing Group and its Security Strategy Director, Jeff Jones, Internet Explorer is more secure than Mozilla’s Firefox. Although he claims to have compared the vulnerabilities found in the two browsers and admits that both companies’ browsers have their “significant flaws,” critics claim that his study is flawed to say the least.

Jones said:

“Since the release of Firefox 1.0 in November 2004, Mozilla has fixed 199 vulnerabilities in supported Firefox products; 75 high severity; 100 medium severity; and 24 low severity. In the same time frame, Microsoft has fixed 87 total vulnerabilities affecting all supported versions of Internet Explorer; 54 high severity, 28 medium severity; and five low severity.”

Continental accepting a cell phone as boarding pass

Continental Cell Phone Boarding Pass

Technology and how its used should not really come as a surprise any more, it seems like every day that a new use seems to come about. Sometimes they catch on and sometimes they fade away, this is one that I hope will catch on.

Continental has begun testing using mobile phones or PDA’s as a customers boarding pass. Currently passengers in Houston will be able to use this new service simply by showing a code that the airline sent to your phone or PDA. The code is a two-dimensional bar code with a jumble of squares and rectangles that stores your name and flight information. That bar code will be scanned by the TSA for authenticity and you will still also be required to have photo identification. According to a TSA official this system will assist screeners in stopping fake boarding passes.

The test period is expected to last three months after which it could expand nationwide. Currently the new electronic tickets are limited to passengers traveling alone, however Continental is working on a system that will allow multiple passengers (a family) to check-in. Continental is the first airline in the US to use this system, however Air Canada has been using this since September.

This would also give a good reason to make sure you have a fully charged or possible spare battery, the last thing we would need it to miss your flight because you drained your battery, of course this has been considered and passengers can get a paper boarding pass by checking in with an agent, but with the typical long lines that could make for a nasty delay.

Debunk: Sega protects the Dreamcast trademark, not doing another console

Filed under:

We know tons of aging Dreamcast fans’ hearts skipped a beat today — us included — when Sega made a rustle with the brand name at the USPTO. But as it turns out, the recently filed trademark application is just a renewal on brand, and doesn’t express any intentions to do another Dreamcast console. In fact, Sega further explained to GameDaily, rather flatly we might add, that they have “no plans to get back into the console business.” We know, we’re already reaching for the Zoloft, too, but did anyone really think Sega wanted to make one last go of game consoles when even mega-players like Sony can’t keep it together?

Ask Engadget: Which are the best earbuds?

It’s Ask Engadget time, which means we’ve got another conundrum for the collective wisdom of our learned readership (that’d be you):

“What should we stick in our ears? Apple’s earbuds aren’t cutting it, and most other DAP manufacturers are shipping headphones that are just as bad. We don’t want to buy any old replacement set, but high-end earbuds can get ridiculously expensive real fast, and we’d like to avoid that if possible. Anything decent in the $99 range? Anything worth paying a lot more than that?”

We’re sure there’s somebody out there with an opinion on this, so let’s see what you’ve got. Oh, and we’re sorry for running our own staff-submitted questions a couple weeks in a row. We’ve been getting some great questions sent in to ask at engadget dawt com, but unfortunately most of the topics have been touched on recently or aren’t quite relevant enough to dive into. Keep ‘em coming and we’ll get your name up in lights before you know it.

This is the broadband department; please hold

Broadband Survey

In the UK customers are complaining more and more about their broadband service, and waiting longer for someone to listen to them:

According to the survey, people wait an average of 17 minutes to get technical help from their broadband provider.

According to the survey by JD Power, 52% of calls are complaints and 48% are service related. This is the third year of the survey which looks at seven factors including performance, reliability, customer service and technical support. Tiscali scored 668 out of 1,000 to top the ‘league’ while BT came last with only 626 points.
