A year in the making, the 2.00 firmware for Sony’s PlayStation 3 is finally ready to be released this week. The update, as its whole-numbered name suggests is chock full of new features, though none too revolutionary.
Starting with the most noticeable, when in the XMB you’ll see the “Information Board”, which is a list of (Sony-approved) gaming and PlayStation related news. Unfortunately, the option of importing your own RSS feeds will only come around in future updates to the system. Also included is the ability to turn the PS3 on and off from remote locations, using your PSP. This is convenient for when you want to update your console away from home.
Other features include the ability to use, change and make themes for the XMB and to change the color of the waves in the background of the XMB (something available for a long time in the PSP, I might add). You can also make playlists out of you music and photos. The device now supports Canon printers. Finally, additional sorting options have been added along with Dualshock 3 support.
While this firmware was much anticipated, it doesn’t exactly step up to the plate. Well, its still a solid upgrade so all PS3 owners have no reason not to upgrade.

You probably know Sharp’s AQUOS line as the name for the series of HDTVs. However, Sharp has launched an Internet Desktop under the same AQUOS name, in three models.
On the spec sheet, the PC-AX30V sports a 1.6GHz Intel Celeron M 520 processor, a 160GB hard drive and 1GB of RAM. Working way up the ranks, the PC-AX80V has the same specs, though it adds a DTV tuner and an HDMI input. The best model, the PC-AX120V has a 1.66GHz Intel C2D T5500 processor and a 250GB hard drive.
All three models have a multicard reader, a DL-DVD-RW drive, and the usual audio in/out, HDMI/VGA output, 4 USB ports, a FireWire port, a remote and a keyboard with a trackpad. No LCD display will be shipped with the computer.
All four will begin shipping sometime in the next few months, but pricing has not been announced yet.

We’ve already seen a number of ultra-high speed alternatives to LTE trialed and drooled over, so it’s about time that Long Term Evolution had its 15 minutes, too. The LTE / SAE Trial Initiative, founded by a gaggle of companies including Nokia, has recently revealed that initial testing “confirmed that the technology will deliver high levels of data throughput both for stationary and mobile devices.” More specifically, it was suggested that peak 100Mbps downlink / 50Mbps uplink rates could indeed be met, and we’re told that confirmation was “achieved using an agreed set of common transmission profiles, test procedures, and analysis methods.” Beyond the hip, hip, hooray, there’s not a lot of details to share, but those interested in basking in the glory of one darn fine trial can hit the read link and have at it.

When Radiohead made their latest album “In Rainbows” available for download on the internet and left it up to the person on the other end of the connection to decide how much (or not) to pay it was viewed as a bold experiment. Now the results are in and we know how many people decided to open their virtual wallets and purses and how much they thought Radiohead’s work was worth.
According to figures only 38% of people paid anything at all for “In Rainbows” with the average price per digital consumer working out to be $6. Among the citizens of the world Americans were the ones that felt it necessary to pay the most for the new Radiohead album, paying an average of $8.05 for it.
While precise figures for the exact number of downloads weren’t made available it’s been estimated that nearly 1.2 million people hit the site in October and a high number of them decided to download the record. Assuming that one-third of them paid up that makes it about $2.26 that Radiohead made for every download of their new work. While that figure sounds like peanuts consider that most well-known bands don’t make much money from album sales at all or as little as a dime per record sold. When you look at things that way Radiohead’s little experiment may actually turn out to be very profitable for the group.

“Manhunt 2″ has become the target of a ban by Target stores. Executives for the retail company have made the decision to ban sales of Rockstar’s controversial game which lets players control a homicidal escaped mental patient as he goes on a killing rampage.
In a statement released on Tuesday Target offered the following explanation for the decision: “All video games and computer software sold at Target currently carry ratings by the Entertainment Software Rating Board — from early childhood through mature audiences. While ‘Manhunt 2′ was given a ‘Mature’ rating by the ESRB, we received additional information that players can potentially view previously filtered content by altering the game code. As a result, we have decided not to carry the game.”
The company is talking about the ability to input a code that will remove the blurring effect masking scenes of violence in “Manhunt 2″. That blur was put into effect so the game could be re-evaluated by the ESRB and receive a Mature designation from the governing body. Players can remove the blurring effect at their own discretion if they want to see the carnage. The game is currently getting a rating of about 70 on the Metacritic site.

Apple’s iTunes is a leading online store in the music industry, and is enjoyed and used by many. However, some do not like Apple and their products, most notably the iPod, and feel that the way their iTunes music can only be played on iPods makes it monopolistic.
This lawsuit was filed by Frederick Black who is a resident in Florida and it has reached the US District Court for the Southern District of California. Frederick Black also feels that the lack of Microsoft’s Windows Media support on the iPod limits the competition.
“[Apple], by controlling such a large part of the portable digital media player market, the online music market and the online video market, maintains sufficient economic power in these markets to control consumer pricing in these markets, which has resulted in consumers paying higher prices,” says Black.
The main reasons as to why Apple may be in trouble are:
- Florida Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practice Act,
- Attempted monopolization in violation of the Florida Antitrust Act
- Monopolization in violation of the Florida Antitrust Act
If Frederick Black wins this case, he will make approximately $15,000 along with possible attorney fees.

Regardless of what those oh-so-knowledgeable analysts had to say, we all knew this day was coming. Yep, that highly-touted, totally “impenetrable” copy protection technology known as BD+ has officially been brought to its knees, and it’s not at all surprising to hear that we have SlySoft to thank. The AnyDVD 6.1.9.6 beta has quite a comical change log too, and aside from noting that users now have the ability to backup their BD+ movies and watch titles sans the need for HDCP-compliant equipment, it also includes a candid note to Twentieth Century Fox informing the studio that its prior assumptions about BD+’s effectiveness were apparently incorrect. You know the drill, hit the read link below to try ‘er out.
