Customizable MIXA USB tape brings back the retro

Looking to scratch that retro itch? If so, you’ll likely find oodles of satisfaction in the MIXA USB tape, which not only weds the modernness of a USB flash drive with the old school flavor of a cassette, but also bows down to your funky fresh customization skills. You heard right — those interested can select a black or white 1GB tape, add on any design they choose and cough up £19.99 ($41) to have it shipped anywhere in the world. Finally, the perfect compliment to your shoulder-mounted USB boombox.

[Thanks, Earl]

PS2 still kicking, to be re-compacted?

PS2 Silver

Reports are saying that Sony’s epic (and still so) console, the Playstation 2, is due for a slimming down.

Wait.

Now remember, the PS2 went from its former chunky self to the thinner one pictured to the right, over 3 years ago.

This purported new version is said to release early next year, retailing at $99; which is minuscule compared to today’s new generation consoles.

I can’t imagine this thing living on any longer, let alone getting slimmer. Reminds me of those older movie stars that over-use Botox to “improve” their looks. Except the PS2 still has some killer games.

As with every rumor, well, ever, you’re going to have to wait this one out to see what happens.

Taiwanese researchers create a dual-resolution touch display

We’ve seen projectors used in multi-touch applications before — most notably in Microsoft’s Surface — but researchers at National Taiwan University have extended the concept by using two projectors at once. The i-m-Top system allows high-resolution overlays to appear over the main display, which can cover a 47-inch by 31-inch surface. NTU says that as soon as it lands a production partner, the $3000 system will be ready for market within six months, with costs expected to fall dramatically after that. Here’s hoping — we just watched Minority Report again the other night and we can’t wait to have a Big-Ass Table of our own.

Microsoft’s HD Photo picked to succeed JPEG

The venerable JPEG image-compression standard is about to get a little bigger — the international committee that regulates the standard just approved the creation of a format called JPEG XR based on Microsoft’s HD Photo spec. The Joint Photographic Experts Committee started looking at standardizing HD Photo last month (formerly known as Windows Media Photo) because it features higher compression efficiency, better image fidelity, and more flexible in-camera editing options, and major camera makers and software vendors like Hasselblad and Adobe supported the format’s metamorphosis into JPEG XR. It’s not all cake and gumballs just yet, though — although the committee approval process is over, it’ll still take another year of work to clean up the spec and bring it in line with JPEG’s standardization requirements. Now if only Microsoft would open up the rest of Windows Media, we’d be grinning from ear to ear.

Gmail, you’re not making this easy on me

Gmailconnection

I keep trying to give Gmail’s IMAP a break. After all, moving from hosted Exchange to a free IMAP service for my e-mail would save me over $150 a year. With errors like this, I’m thinking the $150 is still worth it. And that’s not even counting the stable over-the-air synching of contacts, notes, appointments and tasks. I’m trying Gmail, I’m really trying. Unfortunately, I don’t think I can treat my mail as “beta”…

DualShock 3 said to be in short supply from importers

Filed under:

It looks like those hoping to get a jump on the DualShock 3 action by importing one of the controllers from Japan may be in for some disappointment, as importers are now reportedly warning that stock could be “extremely limited.” According to GamesIndustry.biz, Play Asia says that it’s already filled all its pre-orders, and it’s speculating that prices could “skyrocket” when the controller’s released on November 11st. Some retailers are apparently even being advised by suppliers to only sell the controller with the purchase of a PS3 console, although it’s not clear if anyone’s actually going that far. National Console Support, however, says it expects prices to return to normal within two to three weeks of the Japanese launch, which would still give you plenty of time to taunt your friends with it before it’s available ’round these parts.

Windows Home Server 120-day evals available

Icon_mediasmartserver_3While the iPhone announcement deflated much of CES this past January, one of the more exciting technologies that kept people interested was definitely Microsoft’s Windows Home Server product. If you’ve got a spare box around the house and want to evaluate WHS, Microsoft is offering 120-evaluations for a low shipping price. Here in the U.S. you can order an eval copy and have it delivered within the next 1-3 weeks for $5.99.

WHS offers a simple-to-use home computing platform that consolidates and stores all of your digital media, backs up every PC on your network, and provides remote access to your data; something we mobile-tech’rs just have to have. Windows-Now has a full listing of ordering links based on your location. You’ll want to make sure at a minimum you have a PC with at least a 1 GHz Pentium III, 512 MB of RAM, 70 GB of storage on the main drive, additional drives, a DVD drive and broadband Internet connection.

Test Drive the gOS; the sub-$200 Everex PC from Wal-Mart

Everex Desktop Screenshot

Everex recently announced the interesting sounding sub-$200 PC that is being sold in Wal-Mart. The PC is running the gOS, something that sounds intriguing and looks like it will be fun to check out. Of course the last thing I need is to add another computer in my house. What better way then to download the gOS and test it out with a LiveCD, well actually DVD because the download is 728MB. The gOS is modified version Ubuntu 7.10 with OpenOffice 2.2, Skype, Firefox as well as links to various online Google apps.
