Music industry has another death-spasm, coughs up “ringles”

Filed under:

It seems like very couple months one of the major labels announce yet another harebrained scheme to entice consumers to purchase CDs, regardless of what people actually prefer, and right on schedule, Sony BMG and Universal have announced their latest three-martini-and-a-cocktail-napkin plan: the “ringle,” a $6 CD single featuring a remix and ringtone. There’s really not much more to say — trying to revive the CD single by adding in something that consumers are used to getting over-the-air seems like it speaks for itself — but it’s certainly interesting to see the labels desperately try and nab as much of the ringtone market as they can, even as their partners try and move forward. We’ll see you at the funeral, boys.

PSP Slim security trounced by Team M33’s custom firmware

Filed under:

Well kids, you won’t have to wait too long to be hacking, cracking, phreaking, duping, shooting, dumpster-diving, and generally getting biz-zay with your PSP Slim / Lite, as the outrageous tricksters known as Team M33 have just released their do-it-all custom firmware (version 3.6, for those keeping score at home), thus confirming Pandora’s Battery as a “go” (amongst other things) on the new systems. If you understand what we’re talking about, you’ll be pleased to know that homebrews from the GAME, GAME150 and GAME360 directories load fine, though some homebrews written specifically for the 1.50 kernel won’t run properly (due to some hardware and screen problems on the Slim). Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines, don your helmets, and get ready to seriously rumble.

Sony’s PRS-505 ebook reader leaks out

Filed under:

Given the many opportunities Sony’s had to demo new gear in the past month, you’d think we’d have seen this earlier, but it looks like the company’s latest ebook reader, the PRS=505, will be making its grand debut on the website of Chicago’s own Abt Electronics. The update to the original Sony Reader will come in either silver or blue, feature a slightly redesigned layout, twice the internal memory, and may potentially rock what seems like an updated display. No word on any other changes, but it looks like the price is the same at $299.

[Thanks, hamster]

Sony to dump lithium ion batteries…for sugar water

Sony Sugar Battery

Many chemical reactions are very powerful, but who would have thought that sugar chemical reactions could power a walkman? For all our nature-loving friends out there, this is the product for you.

How this reaction work is quite simple, basically there are enzymes that break down the glucose molecules separating the electrons to use for power. While this is going on, the remaining hydrogen atoms are converted into water by being exposed to air. Sony claims that it can generate up to the required 50 milliwatts to power the flash walkman device. At this time the sugar power technology is still being developed, so expect more info on this in due time.
